  • Patent number: 7889606
Abstract: An optical disc drive and a control method thereof are disclosed to prevent unstable servo-control of a pickup module caused by an abnormal control signal, when recording/reproducing/erasing of information on/from an optical disc in the optical disc drive, and in particularly, possible collision between the pickup module and the optical disc, even when the pickup module very closely approaches the surface of the optical disc during recording/reproducing/erasing of information on/from a high density optical disc. The optical disc drive includes a pickup module having an objective lens focusing a laser on the surface of a recording layer of the optical disc, and a servo-controlling unit performing the focus servo-control of the pickup module using a high frequency broadband control and a low frequency broadband control of a focus error signal where the high frequency broadband control is performed prior to the frequency broadband control.

  • Patent number: 7843775
Abstract: An optical disc apparatus and a focusing method for the same prevent a focusing start error of an optical pickup when using a ring-shaped lens to handle multiple wavelengths, and allow the optical pickup to start focusing at the correct starting time. To write and/or read data to and/or from an optical disc, an optical pickup in the optical disc apparatus emits a laser beam to the disc through an objective lens, and reads a reflected beam to output a read signal. The optical pickup outputs a signal based on the read reflected beam. An actuator controls the position of the objective lens so that the laser beam is focused on a surface of the disc. A focusing controller performs focusing operations on the actuator using a focus error signal generated from the signal outputted from the optical pickup. A focusing start time detector processes the read signal used to generate the focus error signal and detects when to start the focusing control of the focusing controller.

  • Publication number: 20080151701
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying an optical information storage medium, the method of identifying the optical information storage medium loaded into an apparatus for reproducing/recording the optical information storage medium including: moving an object lens at a predetermined velocity in a first direction or a second direction while the optical information storage medium is loaded; generating a sum signal by adding magnitudes of beams reflected by the optical information storage medium and condensed by an optical detector; measuring a first time period during which the sum signal has a value greater than a first level; and detecting a thickness of data layers of the optical information storage medium based on the first time period, wherein the thickness of the data layers corresponds to the type of the optical information storage medium.

  • Publication number: 20080049570
Abstract: Minimum deflection acceleration point detection, focus pull-in, and layer jump methods, and an optical disc drive capable of performing the methods. The method of detecting a minimum deflection acceleration point in an optical disc drive includes rotating a disc loaded in the optical disc drive, detecting a first minimum deflection acceleration point of the disc during one rotation cycle of the disc, and detecting a second minimum deflection acceleration point of the disc during one rotation cycle of the disc. Thus, a stable focus pull-in and layer jump is available.

  • Publication number: 20080025165
Abstract: An optical disc drive and a control method thereof perform a stable layer jump in a deflected optical disc having surface vibration component to increase a rate of success of the layer jump. Accordingly, recording and reproducing of information between layers are continuously performed. The control method of an optical disc drive includes rotating an optical disc, detecting a point where an optical axial relative movement between the optical disc and a pickup module is zero or about zero, and controlling the pickup module such that a layer jump is performed in the vicinity of a point where the optical axial relative speed or movement between the optical disc and the pickup module is zero or about zero during the rotation of the optical disc.
