  • Patent number: 6279039
Abstract: A computer-implemented system performance model based resource management method and apparatus for dynamically guaranteeing delivery of specified constant bit rate multimedia data for a specified duration to each accepted multimedia client request, is disclosed. The method can be executed on any open system server or electronic device that selectively connects upstream multimedia information channels or storage subsystems over a data communication path to an arbitrary number of downstream NTSC ports or devices individually requiring data delivered at a specified bit rate for a specified duration.

  • Patent number: 6097955
Abstract: An application processor within a distributed network of a cellular communications system minimizes CPU resource consumption for processing paging messages by determining whether a message received at the application processor is a paging message. In the case that such a message is a paging message, any other components such as radio cluster servers that are not essential for processing the paging message is bypassed within the application processor. A paging message is sent directly to a communication module that sends the paging message to the cells of the cellular communications system. In the case that such a message is not a paging message, the message is determined to be a regular call control message that is sent to components such as the radio cluster servers within the application processor that may have been bypassed for paging messages. CPU resources can be significantly conserved in processing paging messages within the cellular communications system.

  • Patent number: 6075994
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for dynamically determining the optimal communication mess age bundle size for a communications system based on system resource utilization parameters, such as CPU utilization, message processing latencies, and paging message response delays within the system. At low loads, a bundle size of 1 message is selected. Under such conditions, paging messages are broadcast to mobile units in real time, with no waiting. As the mobile station termination activity increases and the round-trip-paging response delay exceeds a threshold, the bundle size is increased to reduce the processing overheads, which, in turn, reduces the end-to-end system delay for paging. As the paging message traffic decreases, the bundle size is reduced to decrease the delay introduced by bundling, which, in turn, reduces the round-trip-paging response delay.

  • Patent number: 5764961
Abstract: A computer-implemented performance modeling system incorporating data structures and algorithms representing a complex of ordered double buffering systems and buffer management schemes for delivery of diverse data in multimedia communication systems is disclosed. The modeling system enables the diverse data to be delivered from a disk subsystem connected to a diverse data enabled (DDE) server computer to client computers via the server computer and ATM networks in an efficient and predictable manner. A performance model for the ATM network based DDE server system is created that predicts the number of streams the entire system can dynamically support. The performance modeling system enables open system DDE servers, clients and switches to guarantee delivery of information to users dynamically, without buffer overflow or starvation.

  • Patent number: 5668995
Abstract: A computer-implemented capacity planning system for multiprocessor computer systems used in client/server environments. The capacity planning system provides a correctly sized and configured computer system in response to user specified requirements. The user specified requirements comprise workload parameters. The generated output from the capacity planning generally comprises a recommended multiprocessor computer system, the number of processors needed in the system, the amount of memory required, and the configuration of a disk subsystem suitable for the system, including the number of disk drives, the size of each of the disk drives, and how they should be configured for best performance. The generated output from the capacity planning system further comprises a list price, discounted price, maintenance costs and price/performance indicator for the identified computer system configuration.
