Patents by Inventor Kai Cheung Chow

Kai Cheung Chow has filed for patents to protect the following inventions. This listing includes patent applications that are pending as well as patents that have already been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Patent number: 7489846
Abstract: Photonic crystal sensors may be created from two and three dimensional photonic crystals by introducing defects. The localization of the optical field in the defect region affords the ability to sense small volumes of analyte.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 11, 2004
Date of Patent: February 10, 2009
    Assignee: Agilent Technologies, Inc.
Inventors: Annette Grot, Kai-Cheung Chow, Laura Wills Mirkarimi, Mihail M. Sigalas
  • Patent number: 7196017
Abstract: III-V based compounds are etched to produce smooth sidewalls for electro-optical applications using BCl3 together with chemistries of CH4 and H2 in RIE and/or ICP systems. HI or IBr or some combination of group VII gaseous species (Br, F, I) may be added in accordance with the invention.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 2003
Date of Patent: March 27, 2007
Assignee: Avago Technologies Fiber IP (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.
Inventors: Laura Wills Mirkarimi, Kai Cheung Chow
  • Patent number: 7155077
Abstract: A surface sensing system including at least two sensors located on the end of the same optical fiber. The sensors are configured such that they exhibit resonant frequencies or Q-factors that are distinguishable from each other, where the Q-factor is defined as the resonant frequency divided by the resonance spectrum at full-width half maximum (FWHM). Because the sensors have distinguishable resonant frequencies or Q-factors and are located on the end of the same optical fiber, they can be monitored in parallel with little or no optical interference.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 21, 2005
Date of Patent: December 26, 2006
    Assignee: Agilent Technologies, Inc
Inventors: Annette C. Grot, Kai Cheung Chow

  • Patent number: 6728457
Abstract: A two-dimensional photonic crystal slab apparatus having a waveguiding capability is provided. Noncircular holes are introduced to replace the circular holes in the two-dimensional lattice of the photonic crystal to provide waveguiding capability. High guiding efficiency is achieved over a wide frequency region within the photonic bandgap.
    Type: Grant
