  • Publication number: 20230099090
Abstract: Various apparatuses, systems, methods, and media are disclosed to provide a magnetic recording medium with a tungsten (W) pre-seed layer. The W pre-seed layer has a higher conductance than a CrTi pre-seed layer with a similar thickness. In one embodiment, the W pre-seed layer is made of about 95 atomic percent or more of W. The W pre-seed layer has lower electrical resistivity than the CrTi pre-seed layer. As a result, the thickness of the W pre-seed layer can be reduced as compared to the thickness of a CrTi pre-seed layer if a similar conductance is to be achieved. The magnetic recording materials deposited on top of the W pre-seed layer with the reduced thickness provide comparable crystallographic orientation and recording performance to those deposited on top of a thicker CrTi pre-seed layer with a similar conductance.

  • Patent number: 11600294
Abstract: Magnetic media including a magnetic recording layer structure formed of alternating magnetic recording sublayers and non-magnetic exchange control sublayers. The magnetic recording layer structure may include at least one magnetic recording sublayer formed to include a pair of thin films, with the films having different concentrations of platinum, ruthenium, and/or oxide segregants. That is, the sublayer has a “dual layer” structure. The dual layer structure can provide a gradient in magnetic anisotropy, saturation magnetization, and/or intergranular magnetic exchange coupling across the sublayer. In some examples, the film nearer to the substrate of the magnetic media has a higher platinum concentration than the other film. In one aspect, the magnetic media includes the substrate and the magnetic recording layer structure on the substrate, with the structure including six magnetic recording sublayers. In another aspect, a method of fabricating magnetic media with such structures is provided.

  • Patent number: 11508405
Abstract: Magnetic recording media including a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) formed over a plasma-polished substrate or pre-seed layer. In some examples, the substrate or pre-seed layer is plasma-polished using an inert gas such as krypton so that the roughness of the surface on which the SUL is deposited is reduced. The roughness reduction can lead to improved crystallographic texture within subsequently deposited media films, and consequently, to increased recording performance of the media. In particular, media signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), linear recording density, and areal recording density or areal density capacity (ADC) can be improved. In one aspect, a carbon deposition/etching apparatus may be modified to polish the substrate or pre-seed layer with krypton or other inert gases, rather than be used to deposit carbon overcoat.

  • Patent number: 11461955
Abstract: A head-mounted display comprises a display device and an outward-facing depth camera. A storage machine comprises instructions executable by a logic machine to present one or more virtual objects on the display device, to receive information from the depth camera about an environment, and to determine a position of the head-mounted display within the environment. Based on the position of the head-mounted display, a position of a joint of a user's arm is inferred. Based on the information received from the depth camera, a position of a user's hand is determined. A ray is cast from a portion of the user's hand based on the position of the joint of the user's arm and the position of the user's hand. Responsive to the ray intersecting with one or more control points of a virtual object, the user is provided with an indication that the virtual object is being targeted.

  • Publication number: 20220300071
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for selectively enabling or disabling control rays in mixed-reality environments. A system presents a mixed-reality environment to a user with a mixed-reality display device, displays a control ray as a hologram of a line extending away from the user control within the mixed-reality environment, and obtains a control ray activation variable associated with a user control. The control ray activation variable includes a velocity or acceleration of the user control. After displaying the control ray within the mixed-reality environment, and in response to determining that, the control ray activation variable exceeds a predetermined threshold, the system selectively disables display of the control ray within the mixed-reality environment.

  • Publication number: 20220253199
Abstract: A computing system is provided. The computing system includes a head mounted display (HMD) device including a display, a processor configured to execute one or more programs, and associated memory. The processor is configured to display a virtual object at least partially within a field of view of a user on the display, identify a plurality of control points associated with the virtual object, and determine that one or more of the control points associated with the virtual object are further than a predetermined threshold distance from the user. The processor is configured to, based on the determination, invoke a far interaction mode for the virtual object and receive a trigger input from the user. • Patent number: 11398247
Abstract: Magnetic recording media including a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) formed over an oxidized pre-seed layer. In some examples, the pre-seed layer is oxidized to reduce an amount of intermixing between the pre-seed layer and the SUL. The reduction in intermixing via oxidation can lead to improved recording performance of the recording media that are deposited on the SUL. In particular, media overwrite, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), linear recording density, and areal recording density or areal density capacity (ADC) can be improved. In one aspect, a deposition apparatus may be modified to inject oxygen during pre-seed layer deposition to oxidize the pre-seed layer.

  • Patent number: 11397463
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for selectively enabling or disabling control rays in mixed-reality environments. In some instances, a mixed-reality display device presents a mixed-reality environment to a user which includes one or more holograms. The display device then detects a user gesture input associated with a user control (which may include a part of the user's body) during presentation of the mixed-reality environment. In response to detecting the user gesture, the display device selectively generates and displays a corresponding control ray as a hologram rendered by the display device extending away from the user control within the mixed-reality environment. Gestures may also be detected for selectively disabling control rays so that they are no longer rendered.

  • Patent number: 11380358
Abstract: Magnetic recording media including an interlayer configured to reduce lattice mismatch with adjacent layers of the media, such as an adjacent seed layer or an adjacent underlayer. In one example, an interlayer alloy is provided that includes tungsten (W) along with Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), and Ruthenium (Ru). The atomic percentages of W and Ru within the interlayer are selected so that the amount lattice mismatch between the interlayer and its adjacent layers is below a preselected amount, such as below 3% as quantified by d-spacing. In some examples, the atomic percentage of Ru is greater than 25% and the atomic percentage of W is 2-10%. Methods of fabricating the magnetic recording media are also provided.
