  • Publication number: 20110305573
Abstract: A lightning protection system for a wind turbine with a tower, a nacelle, a blade hub and a blade attached to the blade hub is provided. The lightning protection system includes an inner conductor inside the blade, an outer conductor arranged outside the blade and in electrical communication with the inner conductor, a collecting conductor arranged at the front end of the nacelle and in electrical communication with the outer conductor and a down-conductor connected to ground and in electrical communication with the collecting conductor. The outer conductor and the collecting conductor have substantially a same distance to the rotational axis. Further, a wind turbine with such a lightning protection system is provided.

  • Publication number: 20100068059
Abstract: A lightning protection system is provided for protecting a device for exterior use, in particular a wind turbine, from damages based on a lightning stroke. The lightning protection system includes a choke element. The choke element is adapted for being mounted around a shaft of the device in such a manner that a current flow through the shaft causes a magnetic flux in the choke element.

  • Publication number: 20090257881
Abstract: A method is provided for manufacturing a wind turbine rotor blade in which the blade is formed as a laminated structure by laying a composite material of fibre reinforcement material and/or core material in a mould defining the shape of the blade; evacuating the mould after laying the composite material; introducing a liquid polymer into the evacuated mould and wetting the composite material; curing the liquid polymer after the composite material has been wetted; and removing the mould after curing the liquid. At least one lightning conductor is integrated into the composite material before wetting it with the liquid polymer. Moreover, a wind turbine rotor blade made from a single laminated structure is provided with at least one lightning conductor is integrated into the laminated structure.

  • Publication number: 20090257882
Abstract: A wind turbine blade has at least one lightning receptor, wherein at least part of a surface of the wind turbine blade close to the lightning receptor is covered by a protective layer having electrical and thermal insulating material. Moreover, a method for protecting the surface of a wind turbine blade close to a lightning protector against temperature increase resulting from lightning impact is disclosed. At least part of the surface of the wind turbine blade is covered with a protective layer having electrical and thermal insulating material.

  • Patent number: 6612810
Abstract: Wind turbine blade comprises a first (1) and a second (2) electric conductor extending in the longitudinal direction of the blade (25), and one or more electric heating elements (4) for heating the surface of the blade. The heating elements (4) are connected to the first and the second electric conductor. At its tip the wind turbine blade (25) is provided with a lightning receptor 5 for catching lightning, and the lightning receptor (5) is electrically connected to a third (3) conductor earthed so as to be able to carry the current from a stroke of lightning to the earth. The first and the second conductor are connected to the lightning receptor through spark gaps adjacent said lightning receptor and connected to earth through spark gaps adjacent the blade root.

  • Patent number: 6457943
Abstract: A wind turbine blade with a lightning conductor, where said lightning conductor is formed by one or more oblong strips (1, 2, 3) of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics preferably forming part of the wind turbine blade. In this manner the oblong strips (1, 2, 3) of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics both reinforce the blade and divert the lightning.
