  • Publication number: 20040203914
Abstract: The invention relates to a mechanism for providing location information regarding mobile terminals, especially regarding WLAN terminals. In order that the known mechanism for locating users of a mobile cellular network could be utilized for locating WLAN terminals, a location service request concerning a WLAN terminal is received and routed by the same network elements that receive and route location service requests concerning users of a mobile cellular network. However, in the case of a WLAN terminal the location service request is diverted to a predetermined network element, where the access point currently serving the WLAN terminal is identified. The location information corresponding to the said access point is then determined, and the location information is returned as the location of the terminal. The location of the serving WLAN access point thus represents the location of the WLAN terminal.

  • Patent number: 6792278
Abstract: The invention comprises a method for establishing a signaling connection with a mobile station, which method is particularly applicable to third-generation mobile communications networks. A database is created at a node of a mobile communications network, and a mobile station connected with the network sends to said database information about all its subscriber identities (403). In the database, information is added (404) to the subscriber identity information which may be useful when said mobile station is paged (410, 411). Such contactability information includes e.g. the mobile station's location information, information about existing signaling connections and information about the primary paging channel monitored by the mobile station. The contactability information is updated according to changes detected in the status of the mobile station (406). The database will be discontinued for a mobile station that has had no connections for a predetermined time.

  • Publication number: 20040153555
Abstract: A method (and corresponding equipment) for use in reauthentication—after a first, full authentication by a first authentication server (23a)—of a communication session involving the exchange of information between a terminal (21) and a server (24), the method including: a step (11) in which the first authentication server (23a) and other authentication servers (23b) are each assigned a respective unique realm name; and a step (13) in which during authentication between the terminal and the first authentication server (23a), the first authentication server (23a) transmits to the terminal (21) a reauthentication identity including the unique realm name assigned to the first authentication server. Then, later, during reauthentication, to make possible that the reauthentication is performed by the same authentication server (23a) as performed the full authentication—i.e. by the first authentication server (23a)—the reauthentication identity is included in a request for reauthentication.

  • Patent number: 6751227
Abstract: The invention relates to methods for transmission of signalling data in cellular telecommunication networks. According to the invention, multiple radio bearers can be allocated for transferring signalling traffic, but all higher layer signalling is in any case taken through the RRC protocol. In the inventive method, MM and higher layer messages are sent using RRC DIRECT TRANSFER messages, but a separate RLC entity is set up for RRC DIRECT TRANSFER messages. In various embodiments of the invention, separate radio bearers can be set up for individual CN domains and/or upper layer protocols and/or for a group of RRC messages.

  • Patent number: 6747966
Abstract: A method for duplex telecommunication connection in radio connections is based on a frame-structured interactive communication and a radio system where the frame-structured interactive communication is performed in the radio connections. A means is provided for improving the use of channel resources in implementation of interactive telecommunication connection by providing an FDD connection with one or more TDD dimensions. A full-duplex frequency band is time-duplexed into two or more sub-bands in which interactive communication takes place substantially independently. Transmissions in different transmission directions in each sub-band occur at different times, but simultaneous transmission can occur in different sub-bands in different transmission directions. The message is received entirely in one transmission direction before it needs to be responded to in another transmission direction in a particular sub-band.

  • Patent number: 6693892
Abstract: According to the method of the invention, connections are divided into at least two different connection classes according to their requirements for transmission delay. The control system of the base station subsystem maintains a record of the transmission needs of the users logged in different categories and based thereon divides the available radio resources into slots of suitable capacity. For connections with stringent requirements for transmission delay, circuit-switched connections are allocated with a bandwidth which can be controlled dynamically. Then from the resource pool still unassigned after the resource allocation to the circuit-switched connections, a sufficient amount of resources are allocated on a time-limited basis allocation for each allocation period to connections having a higher tolerance for delay so as to accomplish transmission, e.g. of a given amount of data.

  • Publication number: 20040013105
Abstract: An automatic repeat request mechanism (such as Type II/III hybrid ARQ) which includes (soft or hard) combining of initially transmitted and retransmitted versions of a packet, is provided for retransmission of erroneous packets. According to the present invention, in association with each retransmission, there is outband signaling from a transmitter to a receiver that unambiguously indicates when, e.g. the exact time or physical location, the first transmission of the packet was carried out, so that it is possible to combine the retransmitted version with the previous version(s) of the packet. Soft combining requires that the initial packet and the retransmitted packet be identical. In an embodiment of the invention, in order to overcome this problem, the information that needs to be changed between the initial transmission and the retransmission(s) of a packet is sent outband with other outband signaling information.

  • Patent number: 6317418
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system using an ARQ protocol. In the method the receiver requests, if necessary, retrasnmissions of the originally sent transmission unit, until the quality of the combined transmission unit formed of the originally sent transmission unit and its retransmitted copies corresponds to the predetermined quality level. The signal is not detected until after this. If the packet is interleaved and encoded and it is found out that the packet is not faultless, retransmissions of the transmission units of the packet that are of the poorer quality are requested. The invention also relates to a mobile communications system implementing the method of the invention.

  • Patent number: 6031827
Abstract: In order to control the use of physical radio resources, the physical radio resources are divided into chronologically consecutive frames (14), so that a frame contains slots (16, 17, 18) of various sizes, which slots represent a given share of the physical radio resources contained in the frame and can be individually allocated to different radio connections. The first dimension of a frame is time and the second dimension can be time, frequency or code. In the direction of the second dimension the slots represent various sizes, and a given first integral number of slots of the first size can be modularly replaced by another integral number of slots of another size. A certain number of consecutive frames form a superframe (19), in which case frames with corresponding locations in consecutive superframes are equal in slot division and allocations, if the data transmission demands do not change. Changes in the state of occupancy of the slots are possible at each superframe.
