  • Publication number: 20230219056
Abstract: Zein based sorbents and methods of making zein based sorbents are disclosed. A method of making the sorbents involves the use of zein nanoparticles, the creation of an emulsion, use of a cross-linking agent, the creation of a polymeric zein solution, and hydrophobization. Certain versions include iron oxide nanoparticles and the use of magnetic properties. The zein based sorbents may have cross linking and hydrophobic functionalization. Methods of cleaning up bodies of water are also disclosed using the zein based sorbents including cyclical use of the sorbent and burning of the sorbent.

  • Patent number: 6602024
Abstract: A novel method that promotes upward mobilization of dense nonaqueous-phase liquid contaminants. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of: (1) injecting a treating agent (e.g., a polyaphron solution) comprising a light organic-phase fluid (e.g., kerosene, xylene, octane, hexane, etc.) into the Earth's subsurface, targeted within or adjacent to the dense contaminant source zone; and (2) injecting a post-flush agent comprising a polyvalent cation (e.g., Al3+, Fe3+, etc.), or similar species, once the treating agent is displaced throughout the source zone. The treating agent converts the contaminant to a density less than the density of groundwater by inducing in-situ mixing. The post-flush agent destabilizes the polyaphrons thus allowing the contaminant and the treating agent to mix.

  • Patent number: H1206
Abstract: System and method for removing volatile organic compounds from water are described which comprise a substantially closed housing, a column of fluid permeable extended surface packing disposed between a pair of screens within said housing and extending substantially from the top to the bottom thereof, the packing and housing defining therebetween first and second diametrically oppositely disposed chambers (air plenums) extending generally from top to bottom of the housing, a liquid inlet and air outlet at the top of the housing and a liquid outlet and air inlet at the bottom of the housing for flowing water generally downwardly through the packing and for passing air generally upwardly through the first and second chambers within the housing, and a plurality of baffles with the housing dividing the first and second chambers into a plurality of stages for directing the generally upward flow of air in a crisscross fashion through the packing and generally perpendicularly to the generally downwardly flow of water
