  • Publication number: 20070280190
Abstract: A wireless communication system for supporting multimedia services (MMS) provided to a user of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) which communicates with the wireless communication system. The wireless communication system includes a third generation partnership program (3GPP) universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS), a wireless local area network (WLAN) and an MMS server. The MMS server stores at least one MMS message for the WTRU in a memory until the WTRU retrieves the message. The 3GPP UMTS includes an internet protocol short message gateway (IP-SM-GW) having a short message service (SMS) proxy. The WTRU is registered with the SMS proxy to establish SMS connectivity, and is also registered with the MMS server to establish MMS connectivity. The WTRU is notified when the MMS server receives an MMS message for the WTRU. The WTRU then retrieves the MMS message from the memory of the MMS server.

  • Publication number: 20070242677
Abstract: In a communication between a mobile unit (UE) and a gateway general packet radio system (GGRS) support node (GGSN) wherein resource reservations setup protocol (RSVP) capabilities are shared by a session setup mechanism, preferably session initiation protocol (SIP) in which RSVP capabilities of the originating UE and GGSN are defined and exchanged. In addition, the SIP identifies the preferred RSVP mode of operation by negotiations. The SIP is utilized to indicate that: the UE is RSVP capable; those media flows which are based on RSVP; the preferred mode of operation i.e. either UE based RSVP signaling or GGSN proxy based RSVP signaling and to communication a final setup mode for RSVP signaling to the UE from policy control function (PCF). The SIP enables the UE and network to indicate intended quality of service (QoS) protocol during call setup.

  • Publication number: 20070213078
Abstract: A wireless communication method and system for initiating the establishment, modification and termination of broadcast and multicast bearer services using an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS). The system includes an IMS domain, a multimedia broadcast/multicast services (MBMS) application server (AS) and a cellular network. The IMS domain includes an IMS AS, a media resource function control (MRFC) server and a media resource function processor (MRFP). A user equipment (UE) sends a session initiation protocol (SIP) INVITE message to the MRFC server via the cellular network, a proxy call state control function (P-CSCF) of the IMS AS and a serving call state control function (S-CSCF) of the IMS AS, for establishing an IMS-based MBMS session to the MBMS AS. If the UE is allowed to establish the IMS-based MBMS session, the UE receives multimedia support services to establish uplink and downlink connectivity to the MBMS AS.

  • Publication number: 20070213057
Abstract: A method and apparatus for supporting routing area update procedures in a single tunnel general packet radio services (GPRS)-based wireless communication system are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends a routing area update request message to a serving general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (SGSN) via a radio network controller (RNC). The SGSN sends an update packet data protocol (PDP) context request message to a gateway GPRS support node (GGSN). The GGSN sends an update PDP context response message to the SGSN. The SGSN sends a tunnel establishment request message to the RNC and a single tunnel is established between the RNC and the GGSN. For handover operations, a previous single tunnel established between the GGSN and another RNC is released and the routing area update is accepted and completed.

  • Publication number: 20070019643
Abstract: A wireless communication system and method of implementing an evolved system attachment procedure are disclosed. The system includes a first core network and a second core network which is evolved from the first core network. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends an attach request message to the second core network. The second core network activates a packet data protocol (PDP) context and sends an attach accept message to the WTRU. The attach accept message includes information regarding the PDP context. The second core network constructs a session and mobility management (SMM) context for session management (SM) and mobility management (MM) for the WTRU.

  • Publication number: 20070019575
Abstract: A method and system for supporting an evolved universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) are disclosed. The system includes a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a UTRAN and an E-UTRAN. The UTRAN sends to the WTRU a list of available radio access technologies in a coverage area of the UTRAN. The list includes information related to the E-UTRAN. The WTRU receives the list and may initiate a handoff based on the list. The WTRU then sends its multi-mode/multi-RAT capability information including the E-UTRAN capability to the UTRAN. The UTRAN then sends a measurement capability message to the WTRU. The measurement capability message includes parameters necessary for performing measurements on an E-UTRAN channel. The WTRU performs measurements based on the measurement capability message and reports measurement results to the UTRAN. The UTRAN may initiate a handoff to the E-UTRAN based on the measurement results.

  • Publication number: 20060276190
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing a handoff between radio access networks (RANs) deployed under different radio access technologies (RATs) are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is equipped with at least two radio units to support the RATs. Each RAN sends a list of co-located RANs in the coverage area of the RAN to the WTRU. The WTRU stores the list and determines whether handoff criteria is met by one of the co-located RANs. The WTRU then initiates a handoff from a current RAN to a target RAN if the handoff criteria is met by the target RAN. Alternatively, the WTRU may send a measurement report to the current RAN, whereby the current RAN determines whether handoff criteria is met by a selected one of the co-located RANs and initiate a handoff to the selected RAN if the handoff criteria is met.

  • Publication number: 20060276189
Abstract: A method for performing an inter-technology handover in a wireless communication system in which a mobile subscriber station (MSS) changes base stations (BS) begins by locating one or more target BSs that the MSS can handover to. • Publication number: 20060264217
Abstract: A method and system for reporting evolved universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) capabilities are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends a first message to a core network (CN) to report the E-UTRAN capabilities of the WTRU. The CN then updates the WTRU capabilities based on the first message. The first message may include a radio access capability information element (IE) which carries information related to E-UTRAN capabilities of the WTRU and/or a network capability IE which carries information regarding network capabilities of the WTRU. The CN may send a second message to the WTRU to report network capabilities with respect to the radio access networks (RANs) to which the core network is connected and services that can be provided over the E-UTRAN.
