  • Patent number: 10478576
Abstract: A device for maintaining an airway in a patient includes a mask having a portion that forms a seal with the larynx when the mask is positioned in the laryngo pharynx to thereby prevent ingress of extraneous fluids into the larynx, includes an airway tube connected to or formed with the mask for passing gas to the larynx when the mask is properly inserted into the laryngo pharynx. The mask includes a proximal portion adapted to collapse or compress so that a proximal ventral part of the mask can move relatively towards a dorsal part of the mask during insertion of the mask. This facilitates insertion of the mask into the patient.

  • Patent number: 9038636
Abstract: A device for maintaining an airway in a patient comprises mask having a peripheral portion that forms a seal with the larynx when the mask is positioned in the laryngo pharynx to thereby prevent ingress of extraneous fluids into the larynx airway tube connected to or formed with the mask for passing gas to the larynx when the mask is properly inserted into the laryngo pharynx. The peripheral portion of the mask includes a soft, flexible portion that contacts tissues surrounding the laryngeal opening when the device is inserted into a patient, the soft, flexible portion being arranged whereby application of pressurized gas to the airway tube urges the soft, flexible portion into contact with the tissues surrounding the laryngeal opening or the pharyngeal wall.

  • Patent number: 8714159
Abstract: A device for maintaining an airway in a patient. This device includes a mask having a resilient conformable peripheral portion that is shaped such that the mask forms a seal with the larynx when the mask is positioned in the laryngo pharynx to thereby prevent ingress of extraneous fluids into the larynx. The peripheral portion of the mask define at least one cavity for providing fluid communication to the esophagus when the mask is inserted into the laryngo pharynx. An airway tube is connected to or formed with the mask for passing gas to the larynx when the mask is properly inserted into the laryngo pharynx. The airway tube preferably is curved as it leaves the mask.

  • Publication number: 20130220332
Abstract: A laryngeal mask for establishing an artificial airway in a patient includes a mask portion having a resilient conformable peripheral portion shaped such that the mask forms a seal with the larynx when the mask is positioned in the laryngopharynx, and an airway tube connected to or formed with the mask for passing gas to the larynx when the mask is properly inserted into the laryngopharynx. The mask portion includes at least one region of reduced wall thickness or enhanced flexibility, and at least one region of increased wall thickness (relative to the reduced wall thickness) or enhanced stiffness (relative to the region of enhanced flexibility), the at least one region of increased wall thickness or enhanced stiffness having a larger longitudinal extent than a longitudinal extent of the at least one region of reduced wall thickness or enhanced flexibility. The resilient conformable peripheral portion may be an inflatable cuff.

  • Publication number: 20030135222
Abstract: A surgical snare (10) includes an elongate barrel (11) having a distal end (12) and a proximal end (13). A handle (14) having holes (15, 16) which can accommodate the fingers of a surgeon, is connected to the proximal end (13) of the barrel (11). The handle (14) is connected to a rod that extends along a central bore of the elongate barrel (11). The handle (14) can slide along a slot (18) formed in a proximal end portion (19) of the snare (10). Moving the handle (14) towards the proximal end of the snare (10) causes a loop of wire (17) to be retracted into the central bore of the elongate barrel (11). The distal end (12) of the snare consists of a flattened, widened portion (23) which has two cutting edges (21, 22). The cutting edges (21, 22) can be used in conjunction with the loop of wire (17) to assist in dissection of tissue. The snare may also include a vacuum port for removing smoke and blood from the site of the operation. The snare can be an eloctrosurgery snare.
