Patent number: 8358647Abstract: A system and method for allowing legacy circuit switched user equipment (CS UE) to operate via a packet-switch system, such as an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, is provided. The mobility and session control aspects of communications with a legacy CS UE is separated. A user agent is placed in the receiving node (e.g., a home node B) that acts as the SIP agent for the CS UE for session control. An interworking function is provided to allow mobility between the macro CS network and the PS (e.g., IMS) network.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2009Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignees: FutureWei Technologies, Inc., AT&T Mobility II LLCInventors: Kaniz Mahdi, Hugh Shieh

Publication number: 20130017853Abstract: A method, in a network node, for mapping a wholesale network user's identity onto a mobile network user identity that is routable in the mobile network, comprises: receiving, through a communication interface of the network node, a request from the user of the wholesale network for a service provided by the mobile network, where the user of the wholesale network is not registered in the mobile network. The method further comprises, based on the requested service, selecting a routable identity among a group of identities associated with the requested service, in the mobile network, by a processor of the network node. Finally, the method comprises: mapping the selected routable identity of the mobile network to the wholesale network user's identity, by the processor of the network node.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2011Publication date: January 17, 2013Applicant: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Kjell Johansson, Saikumar Devulapalli, Kaniz Mahdi, Mahdi Ali Hirab, Ruth Guerra, Ranjeet Verma

Publication number: 20130012200Abstract: The present invention provides for routing calls between disparate domains, such as a circuit-switched subsystem and a multimedia subsystem. When a user element is homed in a first domain and roaming in a second domain, an incoming call will arrive at a gateway node in the first domain. As a result, a message identifying the user element and indicating that an incoming call has been received at first gateway node for the first domain is sent to a continuity control function (CCF) residing in the multimedia subsystem. The CCF will create and effect delivery of an inter-domain routing number to the first gateway node. The inter-domain routing number is used by the first gateway node to route the call to the second domain. The inter-domain routing number may be associated with a second gateway node of the second domain.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2012Publication date: January 10, 2013Applicant: Research In Motion LimitedInventor: Kaniz Mahdi

Publication number: 20130010785Abstract: Call control for originating and terminating calls in a visited circuit-switched subsystem (CS) or home multimedia subsystem (MS) as well as transferring calls between the visited CS and the home MS may be anchored at a continuity control function (CCF) in the home MS. Call signaling for the call may be passed through the CCF. When the user element is homed to the home MS and served by the visited CS, the bearer path for the call is established based on the relative proximity of the home MS and the visited CS. When a local MS is more proximate to the visited CS, the bearer path may be routed through a gateway in the local MS, instead of through the gateway in the home MS. When the home MS is sufficiently proximate to the visited CS, the bearer path is routed through the gateway in the home MS.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2012Publication date: January 10, 2013Applicant: Research In Motion LimitedInventor: Kaniz Mahdi

Patent number: 8331961Abstract: Session control for emergency services sessions (E-sessions) originating in a circuit-switched subsystem (CS) or a multimedia subsystem (MS) is provided by the visited MS and is anchored at a domain transfer function (DTF), which is a service provided by a visited MS that is currently serving the user. As such, all call signaling for the E-session is passed through the DTF. The DTF enables efficient and effective subsystem transfers of the E-session between the CS and MS, while maintaining the E-session between the user element and the PSAP. The DTF may also provide to the PSAP location information bearing on the location of the user element when the E-session is established as well as provide updated location information when transfers between the CS and MS occur.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2007Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Apple, Inc.Inventor: Kaniz Mahdi

Patent number: 8249019Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for enabling Single Radio (SR)-Voice Call Continuity (VCC) of emergency calls are provided. More specifically, the methods and apparatuses provide continuity of IMS emergency sessions established in 4G access for mobility to 3G/2G access. Generally, a Mobility Management Entity (MME) in the packet switch (PS) domain provides a handover request to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) Server in the circuit switch (CS) domain. The handover request includes an indication that the call is an emergency call and may include an indication that a Packet Switched Network Induced Location Request (PS-NI-LR) or similar location reporting procedure is required and/or a Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC) address. The MSC Server facilitates the handover to the CS domain via the Mg and/or Mw interface.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2009Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: FutureWei Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Kaniz Mahdi

Patent number: 8208442Abstract: The present invention allows calls that are controlled by a multimedia subsystem (MS) to employ bearer paths that are supported in whole or in part by a circuit-switched subsystem (CS). As such, calls controlled by the MS can have a portion of the bearer path provided through the CS when needed or desired. To facilitate such control, a session control signaling path is established between a user element currently supported by the CS and a remote user agent (RUA), which represents the user element in the MS. While a portion of the bearer path for the call is supported by the CS, the session control signaling path extends the reach of the MS to the user element.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2006Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: Genband US LLCInventors: Kaniz Mahdi, Dany Sylvain

Publication number: 20110044327Abstract: The present invention establishes a new protocol that supports the continuity of a single radio voice call onto a circuit switched communications system through the use of a special addressing identifier. This special identifier is called the single radio voice call identifier, and it designates the use of a single radio voice call continuity procedure for the transition to the circuit switched communication system. The applications server receives the single radio identifier and performs the transfer of the single radio voice session without the need for other address or identifier information, and also uses the single radio identifier or a new message type to initiate the correlation of parameters related to service control session establishment in later steps.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 30, 2009Publication date: February 24, 2011Applicant: NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITEDInventors: Kaniz Mahdi, Saso Stojanovski
