    Abstract: For a crane having a boom for hanging loads apparatus for detecting overload is provided which comprises a boom bending moment set value generator, which is determined by a variable quantity corresponding to the operating radius of the crane, a boom bending moment detector having transversely spaced strain gauges mounted on the boom, a comparator for comparing the output of the boom bending moment set value generator with the averaged output of the boom bending moment detector, and means operated by the output of the comparator which is produced when the output of the detector exceeds the output of the boom bending moment set value generator.
