  • Patent number: 5243252
Abstract: An electron emission device is employed as an electron emission source in various applications using an electron beam. The electron emission device has a cathode layer having an edge, and a control electrode spaced and electrically insulated from the cathode layer, for drawing electrons from said edge of the cathode layer. When a voltage is applied between the cathode layer and the control electrode, a developed electric field is concentrated on the edge of the cathode layer to cause the edge to emit electrons. The electron emission device can easily be manufactured with a high yield since it does not have a needle tip for emitting electrons. A method of manufacturing the electron emission device is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5202605
Abstract: An MIM type of electron emission element having a thin insulating film formed below an electron emission region of a metal layer, with that electron emission region of the metal layer consisting of an array of thick and thin portions, distributed throughout the electron emission region. Improved efficiency and uniformity of of emission are obtained, due to the low resistance of the thick portions, which apply a supply voltage to the thin portions of the metal layer, while the thin portions can be made sufficiently thin to maximize the electron emission.

  • Patent number: 5202609
Abstract: In a flat configuration color display CRT in which one or more rows of electron beams are generated with the electron beams passing through respective apertures in successively disposed electrodes including horizontal deflection electrodes, apertures formed in an electrode positioned adjacent to the horizontal deflection electrodes have a central axis position displacement with respect to corresponding apertures of the horizontal deflection electrodes. A trajectory correction voltage which varies during each vertical scanning interval is applied to that adjacent electrode to execute dynamic adjustment of electron beam landing positions and thereby correct for an angular positioning error between a fluorescent layer pattern of the CRT and the electrode structure.

  • Patent number: 5068579
Abstract: An image display apparatus includes a flat configuration CRT which is provided with a second set of horizontal deflection electrodes in addition to the main horizontal deflection electrodes. A sawtooth waveform correction deflection voltage is applied to the second electrodes such as to slow the rate of electron beam scanning each time a portion of a fluorescent layer pattern of the screen is scanned, thereby increasing display brightness, while in addition the correction deflection voltage and the electron beam modulation signals are phase shifted by a mutually identical amount once in each scan line such as to compensate for a position deviation between the main horizontal deflection electrodes and the fluorescent layer pattern.

  • Patent number: 4920410
Abstract: A drive method for a color CRT in which a point-sequential color video signal is produced to drive a modulation electrode of the CRT, in which an index signal is generated consisting of pulses at a frequency identical to a frequency of scanning successive screen phosphor color trios of the CRT, multi-phase index signals are derived from that index signal, and respective time differences between scanning timings of each color trio in each scan line and a specific index signal phase are successively measured, stored in memory, and subsequently read out to produce timing control signals for gating the color components of the point-sequential video signal. Requirements for timing accuracy and assembly precision of the CRT can thereby be substantially relaxed by comparison with a prior art single-phase index signal method.

  • Patent number: 4900981
Abstract: In a flat-shaped display apparatus has a face plate, a rear plate, side plates, and necessary electrodes therein, a supporting plate and plural supporting rods which are connected to an edge of the supporting plate at intervals of a certain distance are provided between the face plate and the rear plate. The supporting rods are made of metal and all bonded parts are covered by guide plates so that no adhesive is exposed to the electron beams. Therefore, over-scanning of the electron beams can be made, without the electron beams impinging on the adhesive thereby enabling effective distortion compensation.

  • Patent number: 4816724
Abstract: During a period in which electron beam emission to a photo-emissive screen is inhibited, a heating current is supplied to a cathode. During a period in which electron beam emission to the screen is enabled, the supply of the heating current to the cathode is interrupted and the potential at the cathode is varied with a video signal. During the beam emission enabling period, the interruption of the heating current supply allows the electron beam to be uniform along the cathode, since the heating current would cause a potential gradient or variation along the cathode. In addition, during the beam emission enabling period, since the cathode potential is varied with the video signal, the electron beam is modulated in accordance with the video signal.
