  • Patent number: 10802266
Abstract: An electrowetting element comprising a first fluid, a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid, a first electrode, a second electrode in contact with the second fluid and a first and second support plate. The first support plate comprises the first electrode and a surface. The second support plate comprises a protrusion which overlaps a first surface portion of the surface and which, with a first voltage with a substantially zero magnitude applied between the first electrode and the second electrode, contacts the second fluid without substantially contacting the first fluid. Upon application of a second voltage with a non-zero magnitude between the first electrode and the second electrode, the first fluid moves such that there is substantially no contact between the first fluid and the first surface portion.

  • Patent number: 10401614
Abstract: A system and method for an electrowetting display device are presented. The electrowetting display device includes a first support plate and a second support plate, A plurality of pixel walls associated with an electrowetting pixel are formed over the first support plate. A color filter is over the electrowetting pixel. The color filter allows propagation of visible light of a first color and prevents propagation of visible light of a second color. In an embodiment, the color filter includes a layer of light-absorbing photoresist that is patterned into a first plurality of regions and a second plurality of regions. Each region in the first plurality of regions has a first optical density and each region in the second plurality of regions has a second optical density so that the color filter has a non-uniform optical density.

  • Patent number: 10234677
Abstract: An electrowetting display device includes light steering structures that direct incoming light away from pixel walls. According to some configurations, transparent or semi-transparent pixel walls are shielded from incoming light by a black matrix (BM) material in a color filter plate and by the light steering structures. Instead of the incoming light being completely blocked by the black matrix, at least a portion of the incoming light that would have been blocked by the black matrix is directed by one or more of the light steering structures to an area of the pixel such that the brightness of the pixel is increased.

  • Patent number: 10001639
Abstract: An electrowetting display comprises a support plate on which individual electrowetting pixels separated from one another by pixel walls are formed. Pixel walls including different layers are disposed on the first support plate and separate adjacent pixel regions from each other. The first layer of a pixel wall comprises a first material having a first color and a second layer of the pixel wall comprises a second material having a second color that is different from the first color. Instead of using black matrix to reduce photo crosstalk, the pixel walls of the different layers absorb light colors that are not intended to reach the respective pixels. A fluid is disposed between the first support plate and a second support plate and at least partially surrounds the first wall and the second wall.

  • Patent number: 9823462
Abstract: Instead of using a clear or a semi-transparent notch within an electrowetting display, a colored notch that is the same color of the pixel region extends from one of the pixel walls toward an opposing pixel wall of the pixel region. The colored notches follow a non-flipped arrangement within each of the pixel regions. For example, each colored notch is adjacent to the same respective pixel wall for a pixel region. In other configurations, the colored notches follow a flipped arrangement within each of the pixel regions. For example, a colored notch of one pixel region and a colored notch of another pixel region are adjacent to the same pixel wall (on opposing sides). Instead of including a separate white sub pixel for each pixel, each pixel region is at least partially covered by a white color filter and a color filter that is the color of the pixel.

  • Patent number: 9786066
Abstract: Clusters of pixels are defined for image compression and decompression. The image information used to define the clusters may include pixel values at predetermined positions relative to a pixel or related motion vectors, gradients, texture etc. During compression of images, image information relative to pixels is examined to determine the cluster to which it belongs. Thus pixels can be classified according to the cluster for their image information. In an embodiment the definitions of the clusters are selected dynamically, dependent on image content. For each cluster a control parameter set is computed for a post-processing operation, such as filter coefficients for filtering or statistical data for locally generating texture. The control parameter set is selected dependent on the image content so that, when the post-processing operation is applied to the image after decompression it will improve image quality for the pixels that are classified as belonging to the cluster.

  • Patent number: 9648308
Abstract: A display device (120) has a 3D display (160) for emitting at least two views of 3D image data to enable autostereoscopic viewing of 3D image data at multiple viewing positions (182, 184). A processor (140) processes the 3D image data (122) for generating the views for display on the 3D display, and a viewer detector (130) detects a viewer position of a viewer in front of the 3D display. The processor has a viewer conflict detector (141) for detecting and resolving viewer position conflicts. The detector obtains at least a first viewer position of a first viewer via the viewer detector, and detects a viewer position conflict at the first viewer position where said first view and second view do not provide the 3D effect for the first viewer. If so, the detector controls generating the views in dependence of the detected viewer position conflict. At least one of said at least two views as received by the first viewer is dynamically modified to signal or resolve the conflict.

  • Patent number: 9147362
Abstract: A method of dynamic of gamut control is provided for a display having a multi-spectral (typically multi-color) backlight, and sub-pixels corresponding to the different backlight spectra and at least one common sub-pixel. The display may f be an RGBW display having an RGB backlight. The method includes iteratively calculating the minimum required backlight intensities that will allow all (selected) color points of an image to be represented by the display. The determination for a light source of the backlight is based on determinations of intensities determined for other light sources in a previous iteration.

  • Publication number: 20150077321
Abstract: An auto-stereoscopic display uses a steering backlight to enable individual views to be directed to desired locations corresponding to the position of the eyes of a viewer. However, a single (i.e. monoscopic) image is provided at large angles where the quality of an auto-stereoscopic image may drop below acceptable levels. This is achieved by addressing the light sources in the steering backlight as a function of angle.

  • Publication number: 20140232767
Abstract: A display system comprises a color sequential display (201) having a backlight (205) comprising several backlight segments and a light modulating panel (207) comprising pixels having controllable light transmission. A backlight unit (211) determines, for a plurality of backlight segments, backlight chromaticities for fields of an image in response to the image content. An order unit (217) determines a sequential order of the backlight chromaticities for each of the plurality of backlight segments for the image in response to the chromaticities. A driver (219) generates a backlight drive signal for the backlight (205) corresponding to the chromaticities and sequential order. A modulating processor (213) determines light modulating values for the pixels in response to the chromaticities, the sequential order and the image. A driver (221) then generates a light modulating drive signal for the light modulating element corresponding to the light modulating values.
