Patent number: 8981025Abstract: Disclosed herein are functionalized cationic peptide monomers: peptide chains of two or more positively charged amino acids chosen from lysine or arginine, or derivatives thereof, which are functionalized, meaning that they are bound to one or more polymerization moieties. The functionalized cationic peptide monomers can be described by the formula Z-Xaan-Z1n1 wherein Z and Z1 are polymerization moieties and n1 is an integer of 0 or 1; Xaa is each independently an amino acid Lys or Arg and n is an integer from 2 to 10 and wherein at least one Xaa amino acid of Xaa is Lys, wherein the carboxyl terminus of the amino acid sequence is amidated. Functionalized cationic peptide monomers can be combined and polymerized to form cell culture surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2012Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventors: Dana Craig Bookbinder, Paul Ernest Gagnon, Jr., Arthur Winston Martin, Jodelle Karen Nelson, Shawn Michael O'Malley

Patent number: 5964218Abstract: A self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency response personnel has face mask with a first port connected by a hose to a tank of compressed air. Back-up smoke inhalation protection is provided for imminent life-threatening situations by configuring a face mask with a canister containing a filter medium, an inlet opening through which air enters and an outlet coupling for attachment to a second port of the face mask. In normal situations the mask is supplied with air from the tank, but should the tank supply become depleted, the canister can be activated. A use-evidencing mechanism is operatively connected to the canister to indicate use of the air filtering system. This mechanism may be a non-reusable cover applied over the inlet opening and/or a valve in the second port of the face mask with a portion that breaks away upon opening of the valve.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1996Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Lifepro, Inc.Inventors: Dennis Smith, Karen Nelson, Frances G. Morton

Patent number: 5822585Abstract: An object-oriented framework is used to build cooperative objects. Objects can span processes on different machines connected by a network. The objects are used to build distributed or cooperative applications which execute in multiple environments without having to write significant additional code to enable such functionality. Each cooperative object has two parts: an agent object and a server object. Requests for services are made to agent objects by the application program (via an asynchronous interface) as if they were local objects. The server object performs the requested service in the server process, possibly using other server objects or systems (e.g., DB/2), and returns the result to the associated agent object. A Distributor and Dispatcher object in each process handle communication between agent and server objects. The Distributor receives all incoming messages and routes them to the appropriate objects in the process. The Dispatcher is used for sending messages to other objects.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1997Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Compuware CorporationInventors: William Noble, Michael Knight, Karen Nelson-Katt

Patent number: 5524616Abstract: A method of emergency smoke inhalation protection of fire fighters in imminent life-threatening situations includes configuring a canister containing a filter medium to evidence use. The canister has an opening through which air enters and has a coupling for attachment to the mask of a standard self contained breathing apparatus in place of a connection to an air tank. When so connected, air drawn into the mask passes through the filter medium within said canister. A use-evidencing mechanism is operatively connected to the canister to indicate use of the air filtering system. This mechanism can be non-reusable covers applied over the opening and coupling, or a sealed package containing the air filtering system. Such devices provide an indication of previous use of the filtering system and inhibit a fire fighter from using the system in an unauthorized manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1995Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: LifePro, Inc.Inventors: Dennis Smith, Frances G. Morton, Karen Nelson
