Patent number: 9706433Abstract: From a plurality of messages provided by at least a first license-exempt access node which give usage information for the at least one channel in license-exempt radio spectrum, there is derived channel-specific statistical traffic information. This information for the channel is then provided to a second access node that controls licensed radio spectrum. Or in another embodiment the second access node can get this information by sensing and measuring the channel itself. The second access node retrieves this information from its local memory and sends on the licensed radio spectrum a downlink message having contents, determined from the channel-specific statistical traffic information, for aiding a user equipment UE to access the channel with a probability defined by the contents. The UE receives this message, extracts the contents, and attempts to access that channel in the license-exempt radio spectrum utilizing the defined probability.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2012Date of Patent: July 11, 2017Assignee: Avago Technologies General IP (Singapore) Pte. Patent number: 8483141Abstract: Several mobile station identifiers are allocated to one mobile station, one for each of a plurality of possible signalling channel structures, parameters, or both. When receiving the signalling channels, the mobile station searches for all identifiers allocated for it in the received signalling channels. When it finds one that matches, it may for instance check a mapping table (agreed at the connection setup between mobile station and the network by RRC signalling) to determine what this identifier means. The signalling channel structure, parameters, or both, used in the transmission may be implicitly or explicitly indicated by the identifier. The mobile station (User Equipment) should monitor the signalling channels in the normal way. Instead of looking for only one identifier, however, the mobile station should monitor several identifiers belonging to it.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2006Date of Patent: July 9, 2013Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Esa Malkamäki, Jussi Kähtävä, Kari Rikkinen

Publication number: 20090219893Abstract: A method and system for soft handover area detection for uplink interference avoidance that includes a network device and mobile device in a communications network. A trigger criteria threshold is determined for the mobile device. The mobile device is using a downlink carrier. If a trigger criteria has risen above or fallen below the trigger criteria threshold, inter-frequency measurements of co-sited cells are performed and compared to determine if a soft handover area exists. Co-sited cells are searched for downlink carriers and reselection is initiated from the downlink carrier to a co-sited cell downlink carrier if the co-sited cell downlink carrier is useable by the mobile device. Reselection is initiated from the downlink carrier to a non co-sited cell downlink carrier if no co-sited cell downlink carrier useable by the mobile device is found. The system provides for reselection while uplink carrier interference is avoided.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 9, 2009Publication date: September 3, 2009Inventors: Sari Korpela, Jussi Numminen, Kjell Ostman, Kaj Jansen, Kari Rikkinen, Uwe Schwarz, Peter Muszynski

Publication number: 20080081634Abstract: A method, mobile device, network device, system, and software are devised for storing a received specification of one or more thresholds regarding when to provide uplink feedback. The mobile device receives a multimedia broadcast multicast service via high speed downlink packet access over a high speed physical downlink shared channel, and then determines whether to provide the uplink feedback about the packet access. This determination is based upon whether channel quality falls below one of the thresholds, or based upon whether indications about a need for retransmissions exceed one of the thresholds.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 25, 2007Publication date: April 3, 2008Inventors: Jorma Kaikkonen, Gilles Charbit, Kari Rikkinen

Publication number: 20080070606Abstract: An apparatus, method, system and software product are for receiving a broadcast service or a multicast service. User equipment receives information about transmissions of data for a broadcast or multicast. The data is transmitted in non-overlapping signals from a plurality of cells. The user equipment then uses this information to attempt to decode at least one of the signals, if decoding another of the signals failed.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2007Publication date: March 20, 2008Inventors: Kari Rikkinen, Jorma Kaikkonen

Publication number: 20080070581Abstract: An apparatus, method, and software product are for a broadcast service or a multicast service by a point to multipoint transmission, for reception by a plurality of terminals. It is then determined whether reception by some of the terminals is substandard, and in those cases the multicast service is provided from the point via a point to point transmission. The point to multipoint transmission occurs at simultaneous times with each of the point to point transmissions, and the point to multipoint transmission uses a common downlink transport channel with the point to point transmissions.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2007Publication date: March 20, 2008Inventors: Gilles Charbit, Kari Rikkinen

Publication number: 20080009320Abstract: An apparatus, method, and software product are used for transmitting a broadcast or multicast. Then, indications are received from various user equipments that reception was not adequate. A record of those indications is kept, and based upon that record a determination is made whether the indications collectively reach a threshold. If the threshold is reached then packets are retransmitted or increasingly retransmitted.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2007Publication date: January 10, 2008Inventors: Kari Rikkinen, Jorma Kaikkonen

Patent number: 7167709Abstract: An inter-frequency handover of a UE connection is performed in which the frequency of the uplink connection from the UE to a base station remains the same and the frequency of the downlink connection from the base station to the UE changes from a first downlink frequency to a second downlink frequency. A request for the handover is transmitted from the base station. The request containing information indicating the second downlink frequency and information indicating that the uplink frequency remains the same. In response to the request, the physical layer of the uplink connection is maintained while changing the downlink frequency from the first downlink frequency to the second downlink frequency.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2004Date of Patent: January 23, 2007Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Uwe Schwarz, Peter Muszynski, Kari Rikkinen
