  • Patent number: 8630057
Abstract: Approaches are provided for a hard-disk drive (HDD) and a method for measuring the contact potential between head and disk interfaces within a hard-disk drive. In one example, a voltage bias is applied to a head slider at discrete increments, and the touchdown power is determined at each increment. The voltage bias at which the TDP maximizes equals the inverse polarity of the inherent contact potential between the head slider and disk, and this value may be used to apply a voltage that neutralizes the contact potential.

  • Patent number: 8338742
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the calibration and use of test glide head gimbal assemblies are disclosed. Calibration is performed by pulse laser adjustment of the flexure mounted to the glide head, while the head is flying above a media test disk having asperities of known dimensions. The calibration process normalizes the fly heights of glide heads used to measure defects on both upper and lower surfaces of disk drive media, allowing upper and lower surfaces to be scanned simultaneously.

  • Publication number: 20110075300
Abstract: Approaches for reducing vibrations, such as resonance vibrations, that are propagated to a hard-disk drive (HDD) head are disclosed. A hard-disk drive may compromise a lead suspension that includes a magnetic read/write head. The magnetic read/write head may be connected to the lead suspension by a plurality of leads. A portion of each of the plurality of leads, such as the solder ball joints, may be covered by a dampening material that is designed to absorb vibrations occurring in the lead suspension to prevent transmission of the vibrations to the magnetic read/write head. Alternately, the dampening material may be applied to other locations, such as the limiter engagements, which can transmit vibrations to the magnetic read/write head.

  • Publication number: 20090167537
Abstract: A device and system for monitoring the condition of an electrical outlet such as a 110 volt or 220 volt outlet to alert a user to a dangerous situation and to interrupt power to the circuit in the event of the dangerous condition. The device monitors the circuit for degradation to the electrical outlet. The system can include a temperature sensor voltage meter or particle detector (smoke detector) connected with a power outlet. When a parameter of a circuit exceed a predetermined level (indicating the outlet has degraded to an unsafe level) a warning can be reported and if necessary power to the device can be adjusted or interrupted.

  • Patent number: 7345845
Abstract: A shock and vibration resistant hard disk drive has a plurality of fluid damping isolation devices disposed between the drive and a supporting frame. The isolation devices are capsules containing either gasses or liquids enclosed in a flexible membrane. • Patent number: 7176703
Abstract: An electrical test probe has a thermally activated, configurable shape probe tip. At low temperatures, the probe tip is in a generally hooked configuration. Upon heating, the probe tip is converted to a generally straight configuration. The probe tip is composed of a spring component bonded to a shape memory alloy component.
