  • Patent number: 6945083
Abstract: The eccentricity of a hollow billet is measured at the outlet of an inclined-roll rolling mill by launching an ultrasonic pulse into the billet from a laser of a measuring device and measuring the transit time of an echo pulse also utilizing a laser and an optical analyzer. The measuring device is moved, during travel of the hollow billet along a path from the rolling mill linearly into the direction of travel or angularly around the hollow billet to eliminate the effect of the internal helical formation of the eccentricity on the measurements. The wall thickness measurements are evaluated by a computer and subjected to Fourier analysis.

    Assignee: SMS Meer GmbH
Inventors: Martin Sauerland, Karl Heinz Häusler
  • Patent number: 6715332
Abstract: A drawing apparatus for drawing metal and articles has at last one drawing carriage and a linear motor complex which determines the pattern of movement of that carriage and hence of the drawing operation.

  • Patent number: 6688152
Abstract: A drawing apparatus is assembled from modular units utilizing modular path-forming members and holder modules which can carry the drawing die and drawing carriages shiftable on the guide modules. The drives for the carriages are individual linear motors whose stationary components are the modular path-forming members disposed end-to-end.

  • Patent number: 6523385
Abstract: A process for preparing the end of a pipe for drawing over a drawing mandrel, including the following steps: (a) inserting a preforming mandrel into an end of the pipe, the preforming mandrel having a first section having a diameter which is substantially smaller than the inside diameter of the pipe to be drawn, a third section having a diameter which is substantially the same as the inside diameter of the pipe to be drawn, and a second section between the first section and the third section, the second section tapering from the diameter of the third section to the diameter of the first section; (b) rolling the pipe with a set of non-driven rolls while the rolls revolve around the pipe and move axially from the first section of the mandrel to the second section of the mandrel and radially inward to from a constriction in the pipe; (c) rolling the pipe with the rolls while the rolls revolve around the pipe and move axially over the second section of the mandrel toward the third section of the preforming mandre

  • Patent number: 4777995
Abstract: Molten metal is sprayed onto a rotational mandrel which oscillates axially and an axial translatory extraction motion is superimposed for removing the built-up hollow from the mandrel.
