Patent number: 6945083Abstract: The eccentricity of a hollow billet is measured at the outlet of an inclined-roll rolling mill by launching an ultrasonic pulse into the billet from a laser of a measuring device and measuring the transit time of an echo pulse also utilizing a laser and an optical analyzer. The measuring device is moved, during travel of the hollow billet along a path from the rolling mill linearly into the direction of travel or angularly around the hollow billet to eliminate the effect of the internal helical formation of the eccentricity on the measurements. The wall thickness measurements are evaluated by a computer and subjected to Fourier analysis.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2003Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: SMS Meer GmbHInventors: Martin Sauerland, Karl Heinz Häusler

Publication number: 20010020381Abstract: A mechanical pipe expander with a pyramidal polyhedron and with segments which are arranged on the circumferential surfaces of the polyhedron and can be moved radially by axially displacing the polyhedron relative to the segments. A wear lining is arranged between each of the surfaces of the polyhedron and each respective segment.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 14, 2001Publication date: September 13, 2001Inventors: Manfred Kolbe, Arno Toputh, Karl Heinz Hausler

Patent number: 5855136Abstract: A process and a device for threading elongated tubes into a drawing apparatus for cross-sectional reduction in at least one drawing step by means of at least two successive drawing units that grasp the workpiece at the outer circumference with revolving driving chains which, after the drawing point formed at the start of the tube is threaded in, draw the workpiece continuously through a drawing ring which is arranged in front of each drawing unit. The device includes at least two chain-type drawing machines 1, 2, 3 which are arranged one behind the other with driving chains, 1a to 3a and 1b to 3b, which move apart radially and with a gripper 8 arranged behind every chain-type drawing machine 1, 2, 3 for grasping the drawing point 6 which is formed at the beginning of the tube.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1997Date of Patent: January 5, 1999Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Karl-Heinz Hausler, Erling Roller, Karl-Heinz Kemmerling

Patent number: 5771727Abstract: A process for drawing stretched metal workpieces, especially tubes, for the purpose of cross-sectional reduction in more than one drawing step using at least two sequential drawing aggregates. The aggregates grip the workpiece on the outer periphery, with two alternately-moved clamping carriages, which draw the workpiece continuously through respective drawing rings associated with the respective aggregates and arranged in respective drawing-ring holders. The drawing aggregates can be driven independently of one another in a power-regulated and/or moment-regulated manner. Furthermore, during the drawing process, a defined prestress force, which prevents deflection of the workpieces from a straight line, is maintained at all times in the section of the workpiece located between the drawing aggregates.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1996Date of Patent: June 30, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Horst Stinnertz, Peter Kalkenings, Karl Heinz Hausler

Patent number: 5649440Abstract: A method of calibrating and orienting forming rollers of an Assel-type rolling mill, and more particularly, of calibrating an Assel mill for rolling thin-walled tubes of pre-pierced hollow bodies about a mandrel, using at least three generally conical rollers that are circumferentially spaced about the mandrel. The orientation of each forming roller is adjusted so as to position the roller inclination relative to the mandrel axis of roll by an expansion angle .alpha. of approximately 7.degree. to 30.degree.. Each forming roller is also adjustably oriented so that its smoothing part relative to the mandrel axis of roll defines a transport angle .gamma. of approximately 7.degree. to 17.degree.. In further accordance with this invention, each forming roller is configured so as to have an opening angle .beta. of approximately 4.degree. to 15.degree..Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1995Date of Patent: July 22, 1997Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Gheorghe Arnautu, Karl Heinz Hausler, Jurgen Pietsch, Gunther Voswinckel, Karl-Helmut Wengenroth

Patent number: 5584203Abstract: A device for changing the rolling mandrels of a plug mill. The device including the following arrangement of stations in series. An entry station for feeding the rolling mandrels into the feeding channel of the plug mill, a run-out station for the used rolling mandrels after rolling, and a transfer device for guiding the mandrels into a cooling station. The cooling station undertakes controlled cooling of the rolling mandrels, preferably by a water/air mixture. At the same time, devices remove the scale by joint application of water and mechanical aids. Patent number: 5355753Abstract: A method and an arrangement for cutting cold pilgered tubes during rolling on a cold pilger rolling mill with reciprocating rolling stand and with intermittent advance and/or intermittent rotation of the tube in the area of one of the two dead centers of the rolling stand. The method includes imparting on the tube along a distance range thereof behind the rolling zone a constant rotation corresponding to the average speed of rotation of the tube such that the tube is temporarily elastically twisted. The distance range is selected in accordance with parameters determined by the material and dimensions of the tube. The tube is cut within the distance range during the constant rotation. The arrangement for carrying out the method includes a cutting unit with a cutting tool and a clamping sleeve which clamps the tube circumference and is constantly driven for rotation. The cutting unit is arranged at a distance from the rolling stand which facilitates elastic torsion of the tube.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Karl-Heinz Hausler, Horst Stinertz, Werner Henze
