Patent number: 5584616Abstract: An indexable cutting insert having a polygonal body including top and bottom surfaces connected by a peripheral wall having sides and corners. In a generally diamond shaped embodiment, opposite corners and the adjacent sides form cutting edges at their junctures with the top surface, forming noses at the corners. A chip groove formed on the top surface includes a pair of cutting faces, sloping downwardly from respective sides to a radius blend juncture aligned with the nose and bisecting the adjacent sides. A pair of chipbreaker faces slope upward from respective ones of the cutting faces and backward from a ridge that connects the chipbreaker faces and is upwardly aligned with the juncture of the cutting faces. The chipbreaker faces preferably have a double curvature (1) outward from the ridge and (2) upward from radius blend junctures with their adjoining cutting faces.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Valenite Inc.Inventors: Karl Katbi, Brendan Brockett

Patent number: 5449255Abstract: A flat disk-like tool insert has a plurality of arcuate cutter tips for machining the side surface of a rotating work piece, and a plurality of linear cutting edges for machining a chamfer on the end of the work piece. An endless land surface is contiguous with the cutter tips and the linear cutting edges so as to deflect metal chips away from the machined surfaces. Each tool tip is aligned with two chip breaker ledges that are arranged in a step configuration, such that chips of varying thickness can be effectively and cleanly broken without interference with the machining process. A third chip breaker ledge is set back from each linear cutting edge for breaking chips generated during a chamfering operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1994Date of Patent: September 12, 1995Assignee: Valenite Inc.Inventors: Karl Katbi, Thomas Bernadic, John Patterson, Brendan Brockett, Tony Lowe

Patent number: 5324144Abstract: A polygonal lay down indexable cutting insert for boring, finish turning and backfacing. The insert has a positive land surface and particularly useful at moderate to high cutting speeds and at low range of feed rates and depths of cut.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1992Date of Patent: June 28, 1994Assignee: Valenite Inc.Inventors: Karl Katbi, Tony M. Lowe

Patent number: 5230591Abstract: A polygonal lay down indexable cutting insert for a centrally located island and light feed and light depth of cut applications. The insert has a variable land surface angle which is 14.degree. at each corner of the insert and merges into a 12.degree. as measured along the flanks of the insert. A second descending angle is 27.degree. along the flanks. The corners are radiused along the variable land surface and the descending angle surfaces to impart better strength and cutting for the insert. Moreover, the first variable descending angle is greater than the first variable descending angle along the flanks of the insert.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1992Date of Patent: July 27, 1993Assignee: GTE Valenite CorporationInventors: Karl Katbi, Sreedwaraka P. Boppana, Brendan L. Brockett

Patent number: 5000626Abstract: An indexable cutting insert of the type having a corner radius and a corner angle adapted for finishing operations comprises a pair of substantially parallel spaced apart faces and at least one peripheral side surface being substantially normal to said faces. A pair of straight cutting edge extend away from the corner at the juncture of the peripheral side surface and a plane positioned closely adjacent and below the juncture of a respective face. To break the chips formed during cutting, a chip breaker recess extents rearwardly and along the cutting edges. The chip breaker recess includes a descending control surface leading to the bottom of the recess followed by an ascending control surface. The descending control surface comprises a first and second planar descending control surface with the first surface being at a shallow angle and the second surface being at a steep angle.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1988Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Assignee: GTE Valenite CorporationInventors: Thomas Bernadic, Prasad Boppana, Brendan Brockett, Karl Katbi, Tony Lowe, John Patterson, Yefim Val

Patent number: 4963061Abstract: In a ceramic indexable cutting insert, an edge strengthening land extends rearwardly of a beveled cutting edge at an angle of from about 80 to about 100 degrees with respect to the peripheral side surface, and a grooved recess extents rearwardly and along the edge strengthening land to direct chips upwardly and outwardly away from the insert and the cutting edge. In one embodiment of the present invention intended for conditions of heavy depth of cut, enhanced edge strength is sacrificed and an edge strengthened land is not provided.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1989Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: GTE Valenite CorporationInventors: Karl Katbi, John H.
