The pattern of photonic structure includes a patterned high-refractive-index dielectric material surface (123) so as to provide resonance at the excitation or emission wavelength to enhance a fluorescence signal from labeled analytes.

The end portions are connected to the shank of a tool and the center portion passes around the end of the tool allowing the fastener to pass through the longitudinal slot and thus be releasably attached to the tool.
