  • Publication number: 20150294598
Abstract: Techniques for teaching geometric proof problems are described. According to one approach, the geometric proof application displays a geometric proof problem and a set of connectable nodes in an initial arrangement. A user then rearranges the set of connectable nodes and connects them using one-way connections to generate a solution. The geometric proof problem is solved if the user-generated solution indicates the correct logical ordering of the set of connectable nodes as determined by the geometric proof application.

  • Publication number: 20150106704
Abstract: Techniques are described for an automated grammar teaching system that displays sentences and allows a user to identify subject-verb agreement errors within the sentences, if any. The sentences may be presented as single sentences or as part of a paragraph. The user may be asked to determine whether the sentences are correct or incorrect, to identify the locations of verbs that should agree with a subject of the sentence, to identify the core noun that determines whether the subject is singular or plural, and to provide a new verb that agrees with the subject. To guide the user, user responses may trigger the display of remediation information, which may include identifying one or more grammar elements of the sentences that are relevant to identifying the subject-verb agreement errors. New sentences in the teaching system may be selected based on historical data maintained for the user.

  • Patent number: 7178566
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for producing veneer strips, chipped wood or the like, individual pieces of wood being joined together, with grains parallel, to form a group and then a multiplicity of such groups being arranged one behind the other, with grains parallel, to form a closely packed line, whereupon this line is then fed in its longitudinal direction, transverse to the wood-grain direction, to a chipping tool. In order, during the chipping operation, largely to prevent the accumulation of coarse chips, it is proposed according to the invention that the leading group conveyed up against the chipping tool is subjected, via the following group butting against it, to a longitudinal compressive force which acts in the longitudinal direction of the line, which exceeds the relative cutting force to which the leading group is subjected by the chipping tool, and which is largely absorbed by the leading group, which, by way of its advancement speed being braked, acts as an abutment.

  • Publication number: 20050189175
Abstract: Ladder support apparatus and methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, a support assembly adapted for use with a ladder includes at least one elongated member adapted to extend between first and second legs of the ladder when the ladder is positioned in an operating position. First and second coupling assemblies are coupled to the elongated member at spaced-apart positions on the elongated member. The first and second coupling assemblies are adapted to be clampably coupled to the first and second legs of the ladder, respectively. The support assembly advantageously permits the ladder to be operated over non-uniform surfaces without permanent modification of the ladder.

A seat gantry system or method may include an outside seat gantry, a seat cart, an inside seat gantry, and an artificial lifting torso. An outside seat gantry is used for lifting a seat assembly off a shipping platform, moving and positioning a seat assembly over a seat cart, and lowering the seat assembly onto the seat cart. A seat cart is used for transporting a seat assembly. An inside seat gantry is used for lifting a seat assembly from a seat cart and positioning and lowering the seat assembly for installation. • Patent number: 5647417
Abstract: A long-timber chipping machine has a timber feed channel for receiving longitudinally arranged timbers, advanced using a timber-advancing device to a vertically movable chipping device positioned at the downstream end of the feed channel. The chipping device has a rotatable cutter ring equipped with chipping cutters on its cylindrical inner wall, which defines a chipping chamber. The chamber is aligned with the downstream end of the feed channel. To improve the chipping, a curved timber-receiving plate projects into the chipping chamber from the downstream end of the feed channel, which also has a matching curved base. The curvature of the plate and the base match the curvature of upper cylindrical inner wall of the cutter ring so that the upper cylindrical inner wall can be lowered closely to the plate, leaving only a very small clearance and exposing all of the timbers to the chipping cutters.

  • Patent number: 5299610
Abstract: A process and a device for the continuous chipping of timbers of different length. To increase the chipping performance, in the execution of the sawing cut or directly thereafter, at least one supporting element for supporting the leading end face of a long timber pack and the posterior end face of a short timber pack is directed into the sawing plane. Directly adjoining the short timber pack, a just sawn-off short timber pack, together with the supporting element enclosed between them, is conveyed forward by one advancement cycle in the same direction. The supporting element, following the conclusion of the advancement cycle, is conveyed back into the directing-in area of the sawing plane, and each short timber pack is supportingly transported, free from any structural distortion, up to the chipping tool.

  • Patent number: 5074945
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and to a device for producing a coherent web from long slivers which are produced by breaking-up the raw material fed and are then compacted to give a web which is subsequently glued and then pressed together with other webs to give blocks or the like. The raw material used is sticks or slabs which are split parallel to the fibers by vertically oscillating cutting motions, to give long slivers which are then compacted by ramming to give a web.

  • Patent number: 4660777
Abstract: Method for the manufacture of flakes from chips and apparatus for carrying out the method. The worn, in use, blade portions of a strip-steel knife are exchanged continuously or periodically with sharp strip-steel knives during the flake manufacturing operation. The feed of the strip-steel knives is preferably time-dependent and/or dependent on the energy consumption of the apparatus. Disposed longitudinally of the knife-ring are one or several magazines for supplying or/and receiving the strip-steel knives.

  • Patent number: 4593862
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the manufacture of chips from mineral, vegetable or embrittled materials. In the method the stationary wear plates and striking plates when worn from use are replaced during ball mill operation either continuously or periodically, either with or without pressure plates for the striking bars, and with different feeding speeds. The advance, or feeding, of these plates occurs in a time-dependent and/or energy consumption dependent manner. The apparatus includes a conventional beater mill equipped with a vertical or horizontal rotating beater wheel which has arranged on one or both sides of the stationary crushing path several magazines for storing wear plates and striking bars. The replacement of the wear plates and the striking bars is done by suitably constructed slide members.
