  • Patent number: 4704782
Abstract: A method of assembling a universal joint comprising two shafts provided with yokes at their ends and connected by means of a universal joint spider having journals supported in bores in the yokes by bearing cups which are unilaterally closed by a bottom wherein the end faces of the journals abut against the bottoms of the bearing cups, comprising initially centering the universal joint spider and the shafts relative to each other and stationarily clamped, then pressing the bearing cups in the bores in the yokes and axially fixed therein wherein the yoke arms, if necessary, are widened radially outwardly and are always immovably fixed radially inwardly, characterized in that the axial position for each bearing cup (6) in the respective bore (3) of the yoke (5) in which the bottom (9) of the bearing cup (6) abuts against the end face (34) of the respective journal (1) is measured or determined and the pressing process of the bearing cup (6) in this position is either terminated or based on this position, the pr

  • Patent number: 4477714
Abstract: A novel method of leak proof attachment of the outer edge of a flange-type sheet metal element in the bore of a steel cup-shaped valve tappet acting as a hydraulic play-compensating element for a combustion engine comprising (a) reducing the diameter of the bore of the valve tappet in two steps from the open end, the axial spacing of the two steps being greater than the thickness of the sheet metal element, (b) placing the outer edge of the sheet metal element on the second step and (c) simultaneously axially applying pressure on the first step with a die and heating by electric resistance with leads connected to the die and the hold-down ram and apparatus for the process and the product produced thereby.

  • Patent number: 4450704
Abstract: A method of producing a metal sleeve having at least one recess open at the nd face extending over a portion of the axial length of the sleeve from a cylindrical pipe section comprising (a) inserting a cylindrical pipe section into the annular cavity of a die which cavity is radially greater than the wall thickness of the pipe section, (b) subjecting the pipe section to axial ram pressure whereby a bulge in the central portion of the pipe section occurs with the central portion bearing against the outer limiting wall of the die cavity and the end portions bearing against the inner limiting wall of the die cavity, (c) applying further pressure on the pipe section whereby it fills the die cavity except for a circular depression in the center of the pipe section bore and (d) acting on the resulting pipe section with a second ram with an end face with contours corresponding to the recesses whereby the displaced material from the contours enter into the circular depression of the pipe section to partially fill the

  • Patent number: 4162568
Abstract: A novel apparatus for assembling universal joints formed by the connection of two shafts forked at their ends with a universal joint spider and having antifriction bearings arranged in opposite bores in the shaft forks for accommodating the spider trunnions by abutting against the end faces thereof in which the fork arms are supported at their free ends by holding clips or claws for absorbing the reaction force resulting from the pressing in or fixing force and/or for expansion by a predetermined amount relative to each other.
