Publication number: 20180363835Abstract: Techniques are described herein that are capable of enabling a mounting system to receive threaded and threadless posts. The mounting system may have a cavity (a.k.a. void) that is configured to receive such posts. An interior surface of the cavity may include threads to allow corresponding threads of a threaded post to be twisted (e.g., screwed) into the threads of the cavity. The threads of the cavity may be configured to allow a threadless post to pass through the cavity without being encumbered by the threads. The mounting system uses magnetism and a taper of the cavity to facilitate magnetically and frictionally engaging the threadless post in the cavity.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2017Publication date: December 20, 2018Inventors: Simon Cameron Dearsley, Karsten Aagaard, Eric Paul Witt, Randal Joseph Kinser

Patent number: 10013030Abstract: Flexible hinge spine techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a flexible hinge is configured to communicatively and physically couple an input device to a computing device and may implement functionality such as a support layer and minimum bend radius. The input device may also include functionality to promote a secure physical connection between the input device and the computing device. One example of this includes use of one or more protrusions that are configured to be removed from respective cavities of the computing device along a particular axis but mechanically bind along other axes. Other techniques include use of a laminate structure to form a connection portion of the input device.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2017Date of Patent: July 3, 2018Assignee: MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGY LICENSING, LLCInventors: David Otto Whitt, III, Eric Joseph Wahl, David C. Patent number: 9946312Abstract: A cover for a mobile computing device includes two or more hinges so constructed that the hinges are substantially rigid when in-plane and flexible when out-of-plane. The cover includes segments made of a rigid material disposed between the hinges. The cover, when swiveled to the back side of the computing device, forms a contour around an object such as a stylus to secure the object to the back side of the computing device when the object is present. The cover becomes substantially flat and parallel to the back side of the computing device when the object is absent.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2014Date of Patent: April 17, 2018Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Ivan Andrew McCracken, Hua Wang, Karsten Aagaard, David Otto Whitt, III, Robert James Bingham, Jr., Ralf Groene

Publication number: 20180042129Abstract: The description relates to devices that include hinged portions and controlling rotation of the portions. One example can include a display coupled to a first end of an arm. The example can also include a base rotatably secured to a hollow shaft that is fixed to the arm. The hollow shaft defines an axis of rotation of the arm relative to the base. The base can also include first and second opposing axial cam elements positioned on the hollow shaft and a spring positioned on the hollow shaft. The first and second opposing axial cam elements can be oriented relative to one another such that rotation of the arm toward the base causes the first and second axial cam elements to move away from one another along the hollow shaft thereby compressing the spring.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2016Publication date: February 8, 2018Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Daniel C.
