    Abstract: A navigation device includes a processor, a map information storage medium storing map information, a position determining module configured to determine a current location, a velocity and direction of travel of a vehicle, and determine whether the current position indicates a deviation from an original route to a final destination. Further included is a routing module configured to determine an original route from a starting position to a destination, and at least one reroute from the current location to the destination, wherein the reroute includes a restoration route from the current location to at least one intermediate point on the original route and then continuing to the destination. Based upon an estimated cost of the restoration route plus a predetermined actual cost of the route from the intermediate point to the final destination, the routing module is further configured to estimate a reroute cost, and select a reroute based upon the estimated reroute cost.

    Abstract: An off-board navigation system includes a remote unit and a supply location. In operation, a navigation system user requests a desired route to a destination. Capability information relating to the user's CPU and storage device capacities are also preferably provided to the supply location. Using the extensive database available at the supply location, the supply location calculates a recommended route to the desired destination in relation to the desired POIs. If the estimated size of the requested route meets the capabilities of the remote unit the supply location creates a filter using the requested parameters and applied to the extensive database at the supply location. In one embodiment, the filtered map area includes a width vector W defined substantially perpendicular to the recommended route R. In another embodiment, the filtered map area is defined in relation to a plurality of nodes N along the recommended route R. A perimeter P is defined around each node N along the recommended route R.

    Abstract: A route exclusion list system permits the user to designate certain roads or areas that a navigation system should avoid when planning a route between a beginning point and a destination point. The route exclusion list system generally includes a database of road segments and a cost associated with the road segments, such as estimated time of travel across that road segment or estimated length of travel across that road segment. A display displays a map having a plurality of the road segments. A user input device permits a user to encircle and select displayed road segments. The cost associated with each selected road segment is increased thereby making it unlikely that the navigation system will use any of the selected road segments when determining a route between the beginning point and the destination point. The system can be operated independently of the navigation system and the increase in cost for each road segment can be associated with a specific period of time.
