  • Patent number: 4600562
Abstract: A filter for treating a particulate containing exhaust gas stream being discharged from an internal combustion engine. The filter includes a compressible bed through which the exhaust gas flows, said bed being comprised of a mass of randomly disposed metallic fibers which define particulate retaining flow passages. The bed is formed with at least one segment being compressed to a greater density than other similar segments whereby to effect a desired gas flow path through the respective bed segments, and a more uniform distribution.

  • Patent number: 4395875
Abstract: Method for rejuvenating the exhaust gas filter for a diesel engine in which the engine's power output can be varied by eliminating the function of one or more cylinders during a period of engine operation. Said method includes immobilizing at least one, and preferably a number, of the engine's cylinders by maintaining the respective intake, and optionally the exhaust valves, in a fixed position. When exhaust gas is at a relatively low temperature, particle incineration is achieved by periodically injecting a small amount of fuel into the immobilized cylinder. The fuel is carried by the exhaust gas stream into the filter, where it is contacted by a catalyst bed to ignite the gas and to thereby raise it to a sufficient temperature to ignite retained combustible particles.

  • Patent number: 4391095
Abstract: Control means for a diesel engine in which the engine's power output can be varied by eliminating the function of one or more cylinders during a period of engine operation. Said control means immobilizes at least one, and preferably a number of the engine's cylinders by maintaining the respective intake, and optionally the exhaust valves, in a fixed position. During periods of cylinder immobilization, the engine exhaust gas filter is rejuvenated by incinerating combustible particles therefrom. When exhaust gas is at a relatively low temperature, particle incineration is achieved by injecting fuel into the immobilized cylinder. The fuel is carried by the exhaust gas stream into the filter. In the latter, the fuel/gas mixture when contacted by a catalyst bed, ignites to raise the gas to a sufficient temperature to ignite retained combustible particles.

  • Patent number: 4372111
Abstract: A system for filtering combustible particulate matter from an exhaust gas stream, and for periodically rejuvenating the filter by thermally incinerating retained particles prior to their reaching the main filter. At least a part of the exhaust gas stream which enters the filter bed is periodically heated in a pretreating chamber. The latter comprises a catalyst coated oxidizing bed into which fuel, and heated air are metered to initiate combustion. The products of said combustion are thereafter combined with the exhaust gas to bring it to a sufficient temperature to incinerate the carried particles.

  • Patent number: 4359863
Abstract: Apparatus for filtering combustible particles from an exhaust gas stream, and for periodically rejuvenating the filter bed and catalyst section thereof, by incinerating retained particles. At least a portion of an engine's exhaust gas stream is initially preheated for the purpose of raising the catalyst to a predetermined "lightoff" temperature. A small amount of a supplementary fuel is brought into heat exchange contact with portions of the filter interior or exterior to elevate this fuel to a suitable temperature. The heated supplementary fuel is then intermixed with the exhaust gas stream prior to the latter entering the catalyst section, thereby causing the fuel/gas mixture to react. Subsequent to initiation of the oxidation reaction, further preheating energy input to increase the exhaust gas to "lightoff" temperature, can be discontinued without affecting the combustible particle incineration rate.

  • Patent number: 4165721
Abstract: Exhaust gas recirculation system for an automotive engine in which that portion of the exhaust stream is selectively withdrawn which contains the major amount of undesirable ingredients.
