    Abstract: An inputted picture signal is stored in an image memory into which a picture signal for at least one frame period can be written, while rewriting the memory. At a plurality of timings within one frame period, an average brightness calculation unit calculates an average brightness from the picture signal written into the image memory, and a brightness control unit performs brightness control of the picture signal read from the image memory based on the calculated average brightness.
