Abstract: An image reading apparatus includes an image reading unit, a compression spring unit, a braking unit, and a switching unit. The compression spring unit serves as an opening and closing mechanism for the image reading unit. The braking unit brakes the opening and closing movement of the image reading unit. The switching unit transmits the rotation of the image reading unit to the braking unit when the image reading unit closes, but does not transmit the rotation of the image reading unit to the braking unit when the image reading unit opens.

Abstract: In an image reading apparatus which can read a transparent original and reflection original, a white background is formed like a sheet. The image reading apparatus is arranged to be movable by a pair of rollers which rotate using, e.g., the driving source of an original feeder. To read a transparent original, the white sheet is moved by the pair of rollers to a position where a transparent original reading illumination unit is exposed. This makes it possible to eliminate trouble in detaching the white background mounted on the back of an original platen in accordance with the type of an original to be read.

Abstract: Images obtained by prescanning a transparent original by an image reading apparatus are output from a printing apparatus as a navigation sheet on which the images are laid out together with additional information fields. The navigation sheet containing additional information is read, and the additional information is recognized. The transparent original which is left after prescanning is scanned, and printing is performed on the basis of the recognized additional information. This makes it possible to print out a desired image under desired conditions from the transparent original, in which a plurality of images are recorded, by operating a single apparatus without any external device such as a host computer.

Abstract: In an image reading apparatus that is capable of reading a transparent original and a reflective original, a navigation sheet (24) on which the content of transparent-original read processing has been entered and a film guide (25) holding a transparent original are placed on an original table (23), and the navigation sheet (24) is read first to recognize the content thereof. Next, a scanner carriage unit (22) is moved so that the transparent original being held by the film guide (25) is read in based upon the result of recognition of the navigation sheet (24). Since a method of reading the transparent original can be designated using the navigation sheet, it is easier to perform the reading of a transparent original using a stand-alone image reading apparatus.

At this time, as the film holder is held by the reading apparatus, its positional shift can also be prevented.

In the device, sheet separating performance is enhanced. Additionally, the device body is reduced in cost and size, excellent reading operation can constantly be realized, and device assembling property is enhanced.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a recording apparatus comprising a carriage provided reciprocally movably with a recording head unit placed thereon, a switchable cover for covering an opening portion for taking out the recording head unit from the apparatus at the time the carriage is stopped at a second stopping position different from a first stopping position provided at one end of the reciprocal movement range, and a release lever provided movably to a position for fixing the recording head unit on the carriage or releasing the same therefrom. The release lever is moved to a position for fixing the recording head unit on the carriage in the case the carriage is moved with the release lever disposed at a position for releasing the recording head unit from the carriage.

In the case of entire-surface printing, the additional information is printed on the back surface while in the case of normal printing, the additional information is printed outside an image printing area. This makes it possible to print the additional information of an image to be printed and output at a position which does not overlap the image.

Abstract: An ink jet recording apparatus has a recording mode in which recording is performed by selectively discharging black ink and color inks of colors other than black. Any abnormality in the state of discharge of the ink is performed by executing a test discharging operation. When the recording apparatus functions as a facsimile apparatus, the test discharging operation is conducted by discharging only the black ink, without discharging inks of other colors. Wasteful consumption of ink is diminished, so that the running cost of the ink jet recording apparatus is reduced.

Abstract: An image recording apparatus is capable of mounting a replaceable monochromatic recording head or color recording head and has a function to discriminate a type of the recording head mounted on a carriage. When a facsimile mode is selected and the mounted recording head is discriminated as the color recording head, a display is made on a display of a console panel to indicate the exchange of the recording head to the monochromatic recording head.
