  • Patent number: 5812316
Abstract: A method for making retroreflective sheeting comprising the steps of placing a light-transmittable protective film on glass beads in a support sheet which consists of a binder layer and a reinforcing layer, and which is provided with retroreflective glass beads embedded in the binder layer, and thermoforming parts of the support sheet under heating and pressure so as to partially bond the binder layer of the support sheet to the protective film, which is characterized in that the reinforcing layer of the support sheet consists of a crosslinkable resin having shearing stress S in the range of 6.times.10.sup.6 -1.2.times.10.sup.7 dyne/cm.sup.2 before the thermoforming. A retroreflective sheeting made by this method has a high uniformity of the joint portions of the support sheet and protective film. Even when this retroreflective sheeting is used outdoors for a long period of time, troubles including peeling-off of the protective film do not substantially occur.

  • Patent number: 5601911
Abstract: This invention provides a capsule type retroreflective sheeting excelling in strength and longterm weatherability, the connecting walls, which partially connect the light-transmitting protective film and support film while retaining the spaces between the two films, being free of internal flaws such as deficiently filled portions and having uniform structure and shape. The capsule type retroreflective sheeting in which the connecting walls are formed by partially thermofusing and thermoforming the support film is characterized in that the support film is composed of a resin composition which contains a thermofusible rein and a crosslinking agent, said thermofusible resin having a shearing stress at 180.degree. C. within a range of 9.times.10.sup.3 .times.1.times.10.sup.5 dyne/cm.sup.2, and which can form a non-fusible crosslinked resin having a shearing stress at 180.degree. C. of at least 1.times.10.sup.6 dyne/cm.sup.2 after the crosslinkage.

  • Patent number: 5008139
Abstract: A pressure-sensitive adhesive layer having, on at least one surface thereof, a layer of evenly dispersed non-adhesive solid particles having an average particle diameter of 10 to 60 microns, wherein at least about half of the solid particles project from the surface of the adhesive layer to a height corresponding to at least about one-fourth of the average particle diameter of the solid particles and if the solid particles are hollow particles, the walls of the hollow particles are not rupturable by the pressure of bonding. The pressure-sensitive adhesive layer has a very low initial adhesion strength (adhesion strength before press-bonding). After press-bonding, it rapidly develops adhesion strength, and attains a very high final adhesion strength.
