Patent number: 6379111Abstract: A ventilation fan for a PC has a plurality of blades disposed around a rotary hub. Each blade is shaped differently from the others to an extent that the air volume handling capacity of the blades is not substantially diminished. The noise level generated by a fan in a specific frequency range is caused by the change in air pressure and is attributable to the symmetry of the fan blade shapes. By altering the shape of the individual blades, the noise level due to pressure change is attenuated. Each blade slightly differs in shape from the others to eliminate air pressure changes. The noise level of the fan is suppressed within an allowable range even when the number of blades and the rotational speed of the fan are increased for better air flow. Preferably, the shape of each blade is varied from the others by putting an adhesive such as putty on the front surface and/or the back surface thereof near the hub.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2000Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Katsutoshi Katoh, Yasuharu Yamada, Masaki Kobayashi, Takayuki Morino

Patent number: 5557288Abstract: A drawer (70) and antenna (e.g., 78) can be extended from a computer for wireless communications, and retracted when not in use. The antenna and its circuit board (56) are slidably attached to the drawer, which is slidably attached to an antenna housing (30) located within the computer. A door (74) is pivotally attached to a bottom plate (60) of the drawer to cover a slot (40) in the side of the computer. For wireless communications, the antenna, circuit board and drawer are extended through the slot and project out the side of the computer. The bottom plate, door and a cover over the circuit board function as a ground plane for the antenna. The effective dimensions of the ground plane can be varied by sliding the circuit board relative to the drawer.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1995Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Naotaka Kato, Katsutoshi Katoh
