  • Patent number: 9349389
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a magnetic recording head records information in a magnetic recording medium by shingled magnetic recording. The magnetic recording head includes a magnetic pole and a shield opposing the magnetic pole. The magnetic pole has a shield-opposing surface opposing the shield. The shield-opposing surface includes a first portion and a second portion. A position of the second portion in a track width direction is different from a position of the first portion in the track width direction, the track width direction intersecting a first direction from the magnetic pole toward the shield. The first portion records the information in the magnetic recording medium after the second portion in the shingled magnetic recording. A first distance between the first portion and the shield is shorter than a second distance between the second portion and the shield. The shield-opposing surface is tilted with respect to the first direction.

  • Patent number: 9117478
Abstract: A patterning method includes steps of forming a first copolymer layer comprising a first diblock copolymer which has portions which are phase incompatible. The first copolymer layer is annealed to form a first phase pattern including a first phase dispersed in a second surrounding phase. The first copolymer is then etched forming a first topographic pattern that corresponds to the first phase pattern. A second copolymer layer of a second diblock copolymer is then formed over the first topographic pattern, and then annealed to generate a second phase pattern offset from the first topographic pattern. Etching is used to form a second topographic pattern corresponding to the second phase pattern. The first and second topographic patterns are then transferred to the substrate. The patterning method can be used, for example, to form patterned recording layers for magnetic storage devices.

  • Patent number: 9064522
Abstract: A stamper of an embodiment includes: a base portion having a main surface; and a plurality of guides arranged on the main surface in mutually different first and second directions and serving as references of arrangement of a plurality of self-assembled dots. A distance between the guides in a third direction is within a range of an integer m1 ±0.05 times of a pitch of the plural self-assembled dots. The third direction corresponds to a third vector obtained by combining a first vector corresponding to the arrangement of the guides in the first direction and a second vector corresponding to the arrangement of the guides in the second direction. A distance between the plural guides in the first direction falls out of a range of an integer m2 ±0.15 times of the pitch of the plural self-assembled dots.

  • Patent number: 8989525
Abstract: According to an embodiment, a light deflecting element includes a dielectric body, a first electrode, and a second electrode. The second electrode is configured to sandwich the dielectric body with the first electrode so as to apply a voltage to the dielectric body. The second electrode includes orthogonal portions that are substantially orthogonal to an incident direction of a light beam passing through the dielectric body, parallel portions that are substantially parallel to the incident direction of the light beam. The orthogonal portions and the parallel portions are formed in an alternate manner on the light beam incident side of the dielectric body. The second electrode includes a linear sloping portion that slopes in a direction toward intersection with the incident direction of the light beam. The orthogonal portions, the parallel portions, and the linear sloping portion are formed integrally.

  • Publication number: 20130077459
Abstract: In a recording and reproducing apparatus, an optical disc is rotated in a rotating direction and an optical system focuses a laser beam on the optical disc to form a beam spot on the optical disc. The optical system is provided with a scanner which deflects the laser beam along a radial direction of the optical disc in such a manner that the beam spot follows a first scan trajectory along a first direction crossing the rotating direction and a second scan trajectory along a second direction different from the first direction. A first data track with a sequence of recording pits along the first scan trajectory is formed and arranged on the optical disc.
