A connection is established between a portable data processing system and a source through a ground network. Uplink commands are retrieved from the source through the established connection. Aircraft software parts corresponding to the uplink commands are retrieved from the source through the established connection. The retrieved aircraft software parts are stored in a portable data processing system. The portable data processing system is disconnected from the ground network. The portable data processing system is connected to an aircraft network in an aircraft. An uplink command is issued from the uplink commands to the aircraft network through an on ground component in the portable data processing system. A stored aircraft software part corresponding to the uplink command is sent to the aircraft network through the on ground component.

Abstract: A technique is provided for detecting errors in persistent memory, such as flash memory, where values of data items are stored at memory locations added consecutively to one end of the already-allocated memory segment. When a new location is added, a pointer to the address of the new location is stored at the location of a preceding value for that item. The address of the latest location is determined (21) whenever power is reapplied. The pointer fields of the locations are searched (24) for any pointer whose value is greater than the address of the last location. If such a pointer value is found, this indicates that an error occurred when writing the pointer value, for example because power was removed before completion of the pointer writing cycle. The error can be corrected by changing the pointer value to the address of the last location (27).

Abstract: A ship is disclosed which is driven by inboard engines with propellers and by water jets producing jets of water. The inboard engines are embodied in the form of electric motors and the water jets are used underneath the bottom of the ship. The electric inboard engines are accommodated in skegs on the underside of the ship. A flow channel is formed between the skegs for the jets of water emitted by the water jets.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for retrieving information through the use of a multi-stage interaction with a client to identify particular knowledge content associated with a knowledge map. The present invention is an application program running on a server accessed via the world-wide web or other data network using standard Internet protocols, a web browser and web server software. In addition to an automated portion, the present invention allows a human dialog designer to model the way the system elicits information, giving a human feel to the dialog and a better customer experience. In operation, users start a dialog by directing their web browser to a designated web page. This web page asks the user some initial questions that are then passed to a dialog engine. The dialog engine then applies its methods and algorithms to a knowledge map, using dialog control information\ and the user's responses to provide feedback to the user.

Abstract: A method for bonding two pieces of a glassy metal includes:(a) partially immersing the two pieces of the glassy metal in a liquid cooling medium; and (b) welding the two pieces of the glassy metal, which are cooled by the cooling medium at the same time, using pulsed electric arc techniques. The cooling medium provides a cooling rate that is sufficient to prevent crystallization in melted portions of the two pieces of the glassy metal from occurring during welding.

Abstract: The present invention relates to modified cDNA sequences coding for vitamin K-dependent polypeptides, in particular human Factor VII, human Factor VIIa, human Factor IX and human protein C and their derivatives with improved stability and extended plasma half life, recombinant expression vectors containing such cDNA sequences, host cells transformed with such recombinant expression vectors, recombinant polypeptides and derivatives which do have biological activities of the unmodified wild type protein but having improved stability and processes for the manufacture of such recombinant proteins and their derivatives. The invention also covers a transfer vector for use in human gene therapy, which comprises such modified DNA sequences.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for developing a structural model of credit risk that incorporates the short-term uncertainty inherent in default events is disclosed. The model is based on the assumption of incomplete information, taking as premise that bond investors are not certain about the true level of a firm's value that may trigger default. In addition, the coherent integration of structure and uncertainty is facilitated with compensators. Compensators form the infrastructure of a class of credit models that is broad enough to include traditional structural models, intensity-based models, and a great deal more. Several empirical examples are provided that compare default probabilities and credit yield spreads forecast by the incomplete information model to the output of a Black and Cox (1976) model. It is found that the incomplete information model reacts more quickly and, unlike traditional structural models, forecasts positive short-term credit spreads for firms that are in distress.

Abstract: A disk drive carrier assembly for carrying plural disk drives is provided. The assembly has a casing having first and second opposed ends, opposed sides, a top and a bottom. Drive cards are provided in the casing. Each drive card has a disk drive receiving portion for receiving a disk drive and provides at least one of a power and a data connection to a disk drive. A baffle arrangement splits an air stream entering the casing at a first end of the casing to flow over the disk drive receiving portion of each of the drive cards. The drive cards and the baffle arrangement are arranged so that air flows only in parallel over the disk drive receiving portion of each of the drive cards. In this way, each disk drive receiving portion receives air that has not passed over another disk drive receiving portion of the assembly.

Abstract: An industrial automation controller module includes a main module and an energy storage module (ESM) releasably connected to the main module. The ESM includes a back-up electrical power source such as a battery or a capacitor that is electrically connected to processor circuitry of the main module when the ESM is physically connected to the main module. In case of interruption of operating power to the processor circuitry of the main module, the back-up power source of the ESM supplies back-up power to the main module to allow for completion of an emergency save operation to save data to non-volatile memory in the main module. If the ESM includes a capacitor back-up power source, it is charged by the main module and the capacitor charge is dissipated if the ESM is separated from the main module.

One broad aspect of the invention provides a bone health composition comprising an acidic protein fraction derived from milk, from a component of milk, from whey, from hydrolysates thereof, or from a combination thereof wherein the composition does not comprise caseinoglycomacropeptide (CGMP). Another broad aspect provides a method of manufacturing the composition of the invention using anion exchange chromatography.
