  • Patent number: 4164682
Abstract: This application depicts a rectangular-type color cathode ray tube having a rearwardly flanged faceplate for suspending an approximately rectangular shadow mask assembly on the faceplate flange at a predetermined spacing from a screen-bearing surface of the faceplate. The mask assembly comprises a rigid frame to which is attached a shadow mask member; also, there are a plurality of mask suspension devices spaced around the assembly. At least one of the devices comprises a metal stud embedded in and extending inwardly from the faceplate flange, and mask-mounted means for retentively engaging said stud. The mask-mounted means comprises a sheet metal bracket integrally formed from the mask assembly so as to extend radially outwardly from the assembly; it also comprises a discrete metal leaf spring affixed at one end to the distal end of the bracket means and having provision on its distal end for retentively engaging the stud.

  • Patent number: 4100451
Abstract: This disclosure depicts, in a color cathode ray tube, the combination comprising an approximately rectangular, flangeless, curved faceplate supporting on a concave inner surface thereof in a central region a phosphor screen comprising a pattern of red-emissive, blue-emissive and green-emissive phosphor triads. A low mass, approximately rectangular, non-self-rigid shadow mask has a central portion with a pattern of electron-transmissive apertures registered with the pattern of phosphor triads. The mask has a rim portion providing substantial rigidity with respect to axes normal to the sides thereof while providing for flexure of the mask with respect to its diagonals. A mask suspension system for establishing a predetermined position of the mask relative to and at a predetermined spacing from the inner surface of the faceplate includes four suspension means for mechanically coupling the mask directly to corner portions of the faceplate.

  • Patent number: 4094678
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a low cost method of making curved color cathode ray tube shadow masks having interregistrable beam-passing aperture patterns. The method comprises providing flat mask master means and curved mask master means, the flat and curved master means having correlative master stencil patterns. Using the flat mask master means, there is photochemically formed in at least one side of a flat shadow mask blank a pattern of blind mask apertures whose individual blind aperture location is related to the end-product mask aperture location and whose individual blind aperture size, at least in a direction corresponding to the direction of electron beam scan across the mask, is greater than the desired end-product mask aperture size by a predetermined misregister tolerance value. The flat mask blank is precision-shaped into a predetermined three-dimensional configuration with the pattern of blind apertures referenced to indexing means defined by the mask.

  • Patent number: 4084193
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a color television picture tube having a glass bulb including a flangeless faceplate and a funnel with a convex seal land which mates with a concave inner surface of the faceplate. The tube has an implosion protection system comprising a tension member which surrounds the faceplate in straight lines between the faceplate corners. The system is characterized by the tension member being under tension to produce radially inwardly directed force components on the faceplate corners and by a lack of significant physical containment of the edge surface of the faceplate along the sides thereof.

  • Patent number: 4066310
Abstract: A method of introducing a high voltage electrical conductor through the neck of a television cathode ray tube comprising the providing of a gun-base assembly comprising a hollow glass stub tubulation on one end of which is an annular glass base carrying an electron gun assembly. On the distal end of the stub tubulation is temporarily secured a hollow holder. An electrical conductor is provided which passes through the stub tubulation. The gun-base assembly is inserted into the neck and hermetically bonded to the neck. The cathode ray tube is evacuated through the stub tubulation and the temporary holder. Heat is applied circumferentially to the stub tubulation to soften and pinch off the tubulation, sealing the evacuated tube against re-entry of air. The temporary holder is detached from the stub tubulation to form a cup in the end of the tubulation for receiving an electrical connector.

  • Patent number: 4020493
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a novel low cost, high performance color cathode ray tube of the shadow mask type, and methods and apparatus for manufacturing the tube. The tube has a novel envelope, on a faceplate portion of which is corner-suspended a lightweight, non-self-rigid shadow mask. The tube has a variety of features and is especially adapted to be made by manufacturing methods which permit the screened faceplates to be interchanged, each with all others, and the shadow masks to be interchanged, each with all others, with consequent economies in manufacture and enhanced tube performance. This disclosure stresses the structure of masters employed in the making of the screen.

  • Patent number: 4012773
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a novel facebond system for implosion protecting a rectangular, shadow mask type color television picture tube having a flangeless faceplate with a central viewing area and a relatively wide peripheral non-viewing area. The facebond system is illustrated as comprising, in its most general sense, a metal high tensile strength frame having a curvature similar to the curvature of the faceplate and having substantially the same rectangular shape and size of the faceplate. The frame has a substantially rectangular central window slightly larger than the viewing area of the faceplate and is bonded to the non-viewing area of the faceplate so as to environ the viewing area thereof. The system assists in retaining in position the shards of a shattered faceplate and thereby provides for a relatively gradual buildup of pressure in the tube.

This disclosure stresses methods of tube manufacture by which the faceplates and masks are rendered respectively interchangeable. This disclosure also stresses photoprinting methods for making masters employed in the screening of the tube faceplates and in mask manufacture, and for making masters employed in the actual screening of faceplates and in the formation of aperture patterns in shadow masks.
