    Abstract: An intake-air cooling system configured to cool intake air of a vehicle engine is provided, which includes an intake passage, a compressor, an evaporator, and a controller. The intake passage branches to first and second intake passages and is provided with a damper configured to change a ratio between air flow rates flowing into the first and second intake passages. The evaporator is provided to the second intake passage and cools the air flowing therethrough. When the controller does not determine that the engine driving state belongs to a knock occurring range, the controller controls the compressor so that a flow rate of refrigerant supplied to the evaporator becomes smaller within a range larger than zero, and controls the damper so that the ratio of the flow rate of the air flowing into the second intake passage becomes smaller, than a case the state belongs to the knock occurring range.

    Abstract: An intake system distributes air into cylinders of an internal combustion engine, which are divided into two groups. The cylinders in each group are arranged in the same row so that adjoining cylinders in each row do not fire one after another. An intake passage is formed with an upstream passage and two separate downstream passages, extending from the upstream passage, which are connected to the two groups of cylinders. The upstream passage is divided by a partition wall into two separate upstream passages in communication with the two separate downstream passages, respectively. A throttle valve is disposed adjacent to the intake passage so as to extend a path of each separate upstream passage when the throttle valve is in its full throttle position.

The intake system has conflux chambers for the cylinder rows, connected to the cylinders by intake passages, and also interconnected to each other by a communication passage having a valve. First and second resonant passages are each connected at one end to the respective conflux chambers and are joined together to communicate with each other at another end, opposite to the one end, in a location at which a throttle body is located. The first resonant passage has a connection point with one conflux chamber closer to an interconnection between both the conflux chambers than a connection point in a lengthwise direction of the second resonant passage with another conflux chamber.

    Abstract: A V-type engine has a plurality of cylinders formed in a pair of cylinder banks. An intake system for the V-type engine includes a surge tank which is communicated with the atmosphere through a common intake passage provided with a throttle valve, discrete intake passages which branch off from the surge tank and are connected to the responsive cylinders, branch passages which branch off from the respective discrete intake passages, one or more volume chambers each of which is communicated with at least two of the branch passages, on-off valves which are respectively provided in the branch passages and are opened and closed according to the operating conditions of the engine. The surge tank is disposed above one of the cylinder banks and the volume chamber or volume chambers are disposed above the other cylinder bank.

    Abstract: Each of the cylinder heads forming right and left cylinder banks of a V-type engine is provided, in the inner side wall thereof, with intake ports each communicating with a cylinder formed in the cylinder bank. A camshaft is provided in each cylinder bank above intake and exhaust valves to drive the valves in synchronization with the rotation of the engine and supported for rotation by a plurality of bearings. Each discrete intake passage is connected to one of the intake port of one of the cylinder banks and extends above the other cylinder bank. Cylinder head covers mounted on the respective cylinder heads are provided with recessed portions at the portions corresponding to the inter-bearing portions of the camshaft and said discrete intake passages extend through the recessed portions.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an internal combustion engine including a plurality of groups of combustion chambers and at least a first expansion chamber and a second expansion chamber. The first and second expansion chambers extend in a lengthwise direction and are separated from each other by a partition wall. The first expansion chamber is connected with one group of combustion chambers through separate branch passages. The second expansion chamber is also connected with another group of combustion chambers respectively through separate branch passages. First and second intake passages are connected at downstream ends with the first expansion chamber and the second expansion chamber, respectively. An auxiliary communicating passage is provided along the partition wall independent from said first and second intake passages and connects the first and second expansion chambers with each other.
