  • Patent number: 6443449
Abstract: A paper sheet discharge apparatus comprises a transport roller for transporting paper sheets discharged from an image-forming apparatus, a plurality of switching flappers for guiding the paper sheets to desired bins, and a plurality of delivery rollers for discharging the paper sheets via the switching flappers to the bins. The paper sheets are reliably stored in the desired bins without decreasing their transport speed by the aid of the transport roller, the switching flappers, and the delivery rollers. The power from a motor is transmitted only to the delivery rollers which are used to discharge the paper sheets while being interlocked with the specified switching flapper. Therefore, it is possible to diminish the load on the motor.

  • Patent number: 6331003
Abstract: A recording medium discharging apparatus which can be mounted on top of the image forming apparatus includes a plurality of recording medium storers and a locking mechanism for locking the discharging apparatus to the image forming apparatus when the discharging apparatus is mounted on the image forming apparatus. The locking mechanism includes a release lever for unlocking the discharging apparatus by being manipulated to shift in the same direction as the discharging apparatus moves away from the image forming apparatus to be dismounted from it. The locking mechanism prevents the discharging apparatus from falling off the image forming apparatus even if external force is applied to the discharging apparatus mounted on the image forming apparatus. The release lever for unlocking the discharging apparatus makes it easy to dismount the discharging apparatus from the image forming apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6295081
Abstract: A recording medium discharge apparatus includes bins for storing sheets of paper therein. The apparatus also includes level sensors for each detecting one of the bins having been filled with paper sheets. Each sensor consists of a light emitter and a light receiver, which are positioned on both sides of the associated bin. The emitter and the receiver are aligned on a line extending across the direction in which paper sheets can be discharged. This prevents paper sheets from coming into direct contact with the sensors. Even if paper sheets discharged into each bin are once taken out and then returned to it, the returned sheets do not come in contact with the associated sensor. It is therefore possible to keep the discharge of paper sheets in good condition.

  • Patent number: 5826152
Abstract: A fixing unit for an image forming device such as a laser printer includes a heat roller and a heating member driving unit to drive the heat roller. The heat roller includes a hollow cylindrical tube and a resistance heating member to selectively heat portions of the tube along the axial length thereof. The resistance heating member includes an insulating layer and a conductive layer. The conductive layer is provided with a plurality of resistance heating patterns arranged along the axial length of the tube and connected to a plurality of electrode portions. The connections between the resistance heating patterns and the electrode portions are arranged such that applying a voltage across selected electrode portions causes selected resistance patterns to generate heat and thus, selectively heat a portion of the tube along the axial length thereof.

  • Patent number: 5294106
Abstract: An image forming apparatus in which probability of sheet jamming is reduced and jammed sheet can be easily removed. The apparatus is provided with a guide plate, a movable guide plate defining a sheet feed passage therebetween, and a first sheet feed roller. A detachable sheet cassette is provided for attachment to a main body portion of the apparatus. In the sheet cassette, are provided a second sheet feed roller and a leaf spring which urges the second sheet feed roller toward the first sheet feed roller when the sheet cassette is attached to the main body portion. The sheet feed passage is opened by pivotal movement of the movable guide plate when the sheet cassette is detached from the main body portion, to thereby facilitate removal of the jamming sheet from the sheet feed passage.

  • Patent number: 5292117
Abstract: A sheet feed cassette capable of preventing a sheet of a sheet stack from diagonal feeding when the sheet is delivered out of the cassette. The sheet feed cassette has sheet guides at lateral sides thereof whose inner surfaces serve as sheet guide surfaces. In the sheet guide, box like portions are provided. In the box-like portions, sub-guides are provided protrudable from upper ends of the sheet guides. The sub-guides have sub-guide surfaces flush with the guide surfaces of the sheet guides. Each lateral side edge of the sheet is abuttable with each of the sub-guide surfaces if the sheet is positioned above the upper ends of the sheet guides for guiding the sheet in a sheet feeding direction. Thus, the diagonal travel of the sheet can be obviated by the sub-guides.

  • Patent number: 5087142
Abstract: A sheet feeder for a printer selectively feeds a continuous sheet and a cut sheet to a printing mechanism including a platen and a print head. The continuous sheet is fed by a pair of pin tractors and the platen while the cut sheet is fed only by the platen. At least one sheet presser roller is provided for guiding the feeding of the cut sheet, which moves toward the platen when the cut sheet is fed so as to hold the latter against the platen, and moves away from the platen when the continuous sheet is fed. A switching lever sets the sheet feed mode, which when moved to a first position causes to feed the cut sheet by rotating the platen and when moved to a second position causes to feed the continuous sheet by rotating both the pin tractors and the platen.

  • Patent number: 5073055
Abstract: In a printer of the type having a print mechanism comprising a platen rotatable about its own axis for supporting a print sheet, an ink ribbon cassette accommodating an ink ribbon therein, and a print head movable along the platen for performing a print operation on the print sheet with the use of the ink ribbon, a hopper storing a stack of cut sheets is disposed above a first area of a printer frame and a stacker above a second area thereof. A pin tractor is disposed beneath the first area thereof for mounting a continuous sheet. The cut sheet and the continuous sheet are selectively fed to the print mechanism for printing. The stacker is movably disposed between a cut sheet receiving position allowing to receive the cut sheets discharged from the platen and a rest position rejecting to receive the cut sheet. A space above the second area is enlarged when the stacker is brought to the rest position, whereby the ink ribbon cassette disposed beneath the second area can easily be exchanged.

  • Patent number: 4896977
Abstract: A thermal printer for printing with a print head moved relative to and in contact with a recording medium, supported by a platen. The print head has a plurality of printing elements arranged on its front surface, in a direction intersecting a print line. The print head is supported by a support structure movably between printing and retracted positions. The support structure provides, at least when placed in the printing position, a wedge-shaped clearance between the front surface of the print head, and a plane tangent to the bearing surface of the platen. The wedge-shaped clearance increases with a distance from the printing elements in a direction parallel to the print line. The print head further has a head driver secured on its front surface such that the head driver is positioned within said wedge-shaped clearance. The head driver is electrically connected to the printing elements, for controlling energization of the printing elements.

  • Patent number: 4836698
Abstract: In a printing apparatus wherein a reversible ribbon cassette is detachably installed, provided are means for indicating which side of the ribbon cassette is the side facing upward and means for detecting whether the side of the ribbon cassette attempted to be reloaded after once removed is the side facing upward or not based upon the indicating means. Thereby, misloading with the not-on-use side of ribbon cassette turned up is prevented and accordingly possibilities of blurred printing caused by use of already used area of the ribbon and/or of waste of the ribbon with remaining non-used portion thereon can be avoided. Further, even if the ribbon cassette installed in the apparatus is a multi-use-type one, the possibility of the printing quality being uneven due to the difference in number of times of use in places on the ribbon can also be prevented.
