    Abstract: A liquid crystal display device exhibits high reliability and is capable of miniaturization by eliminating a mechanical operating mechanism. At least a light guide plate which guides light from a light source, a liquid crystal display panel, an optical medium which changes over transmission and reflection of light, color filters and a reflector are sequentially arranged from the viewer side. The color of the light from the light source are sequentially changed over to provide three primary colors, and this light passes through the liquid crystal display panel and is reflected toward the viewer side by the optical medium. The color filters are constituted for respective primary colors and are arranged to face at least three pixels which are disposed close to each other. The reflector reflects ambient light which passes through the light guide plate, liquid crystal display panel, optical medium and color filters to the viewer side.

At two pixel regions which are selected from the respective pixel regions, the height of background layers on which the electrodes which constitute the lower layers with respect to the interlayer insulation films are formed differs with respect to a surface of one substrate. The film thickness of the interlayer insulation film is set small with respect to the high background layer out of respective background layers which differ in height and is set large with respect to the low background layer out of respective background layers which differ in height.

On a liquid-crystal-side surface of one substrate out of substrates which are arranged to face each other in an opposed manner while sandwiching a liquid crystal therebetween, a switching element which is operated in response to scanning signals from a gate signal line, a pixel electrode to which video signals from a drain signal line are supplied via the switching element, and a reference electrode which generates an electric field between the reference electrode and the pixel electrode are mounted on each pixel region of the liquid-crystal-side surface. The video signals from the drain signal line are generated by a driver chip mounted on one substrate. A light transmittivity of the liquid crystal layer is set to take a minimum value when a voltage is not applied between the pixel electrode and the reference electrode.
