  • Patent number: 5296868
Abstract: A display apparatus for a vehicle by which the brightness of a display image can be varied readily without using a dimming circuit and a display image of a high contrast can be assured. The display apparatus comprises a light emitting displaying element for emitting visible light therefrom, and a reflecting member for reflecting visible light from the light emitting displaying element toward a driver of the vehicle directly or indirectly by way of a component of the vehilce such as a windshield. The reflecting member is selectively moved between a first position at which the reflecting member totally reflects visible light from the light emitting displaying means and a second position at which the reflecting member reflects visible light from the light emitting displaying element but at a comparatively low reflecting rate.

  • Patent number: 5266930
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a display apparatus which can display information well and does not compromise the feel of a helmet in which the display apparatus is incorporated. The helmet has a front opening formed therein and has a transparent shield mounted thereon so as to cover the front opening. The display apparatus incorporates a display unit disposed on the inner side of the helmet for displaying information thereon. Display light from the display unit is reflected toward a visual point position by an inner face of the shield so that an observer visually observes a virtual image of the display information of the display unit from within the helmet through the shield. The display unit is disposed on the inner side of a chin portion of the helmet so as to not to create any obstruction to the observer.

  • Patent number: 5157549
Abstract: The automotive headup display apparatus contains an indicator and a reflection member and has an opening directed toward a reflection surface as on a windshield. A Fresnel lens is installed in the opening for enlarging a display image of the indicator. The reflection member is disposed facing and between the indicator and the reflection surface. The reflection member is coated with a hologram emulsion layer to have a wavelength selection capability such that only the rays of light with almost the same wavelength as display light of the indicator are reflected by the reflection membeer. With this arrangement, when external light should enter the indicator unit from the reflection surface on the windshield, those rays of light different in wavelength from the display light are not reflected toward the indicator, preventing the display of the indicator from being obscured as in the conventional apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5153775
Abstract: A display apparatus for a vehicle or the like prevents occurrence of a washout phenomenon or the like and is stable and high in visual observation even in an intense external light condition. The display apparatus includes a display unit, and a prism having first and second mutually intersecting faces opposed to the display unit such that light from the display unit is emitted by way of the prism to provide a display of a display image of the display unit. The prism is disposed such that incidence light to the first face thereof remote from the display unit is totally reflected by the second face thereof adjacent the display unit to restrict the incidence angle to the prism of light which can pass through the prism toward the display unit.
