  • Patent number: 6796694
Abstract: A vehicular signal lamp providing a uniformly bright appearance even when the lamp is observed in a lateral direction. A reflecting surface of a reflector is composed of a plurality of reflecting elements for diffusing and reflecting in right and left directions the light from a light source bulb. A left direction maximum diffusion angle of the respective reflecting elements is set to a smaller value the nearer the reflecting element is located to the left end portion of the reflecting surface, and a right direction maximum diffusion angle R of the respective reflecting elements is set to a smaller value the nearer the reflecting element is located to the right end portion of the reflecting surface. Thereby, when the light is observed in a lateral direction by moving the viewing position from the light front direction to the right or left, the entire reflecting surface appears bright within a certain light viewing angle.

  • Patent number: 6796695
Abstract: A vehicular lamp utilizing an indirect lighting technique employing a plurality of LED light sources and which has a slim profile and improved appearance when lit. A reflector is provided which is composed of a plurality of small reflectors having a serrated shape and arranged in a linear array extending in the lateral direction. A LED light source is provided in a space to the side of each of the small reflectors, and light is radiated onto the reflecting surface of the adjacent small reflector. With this configuration, there is no need of providing a special cover member to hide the LED light sources when viewed from the front of the lamp. The small reflectors may also be arranged in a rectilinear array to achieve a uniformly illuminated generally planar surface.

  • Publication number: 20040120160
Abstract: A vehicular lamp including a first LED light source that faces the back of the lamp so that its light is reflected forward of the lamp by a reflector, thus providing soft lighting due to an indirect lighting effect, the lamp further including a second LED light source that is disposed, so as to face the front of the lamp, on the front side of a circuit board that supports the first LED light source. A cover member that covers the circuit board is disposed on the front side of the second LED light source, and the cover member is formed with diffusion lens elements, thus allowing light from the second LED light source to be diffused and transmitted forward of the lamp and letting a portion of the lamp, which corresponds to the second LED light source, to appear brilliantly.

  • Patent number: 6657393
Abstract: A vehicle lamp has light sources having light emitting diodes that are vertically and horizontally disposed in the form of a square. A first LED group is disposed in the central position of the light source and is turned on in the tail lamp lighting mode. A second LED group surrounds the first LED group, and is turned on together with the first LED group in the stop lamp lighting mode. Thus, the light source appears as if the LEDs became luminous around the central position of the light source in any lamp lighting mode.

  • Publication number: 20030174514
Abstract: A vehicular lamp employing a plurality of LED light sources and arranged to emit light using indirect illumination wherein the total light emittance in the front direction of the lamp is increased by more effectively using the light from the LED light sources. The LED light sources are arranged in a line in the vertical direction such that their direction of light emission is toward the rear of the lamp. The reflecting surface of the reflector is divided into right and left reflecting areas by a boundary line. With this arrangement, a large portion of the light from each LED light source contributes to the light reflected by the reflector. The reflecting areas are divided into a plurality of small reflecting surfaces, preferably two for each LED light source. Thus, it is possible to separately control the reflection of the light from each LED light source by the small reflecting surfaces on both sides of the LED light sources.

  • Patent number: 6543921
Abstract: A vehicular indicator lamp that provides an observer with a novel visual impression even when the point of observation is moved either horizontally or vertically while ensuring clarity of the lamp. A reflective surface of a reflector is divided in an orthogonal grid into a plurality of segments, each of which is allocated a reflective element. The reflective surface is formed as a two-dimensional wavy surface in which concave surface reflective elements and convex surface reflective elements are alternatingly repeated in each of two directions. As a result, in the case where the reflective surface of the lamp is viewed from the front, when the point of observation is moved horizontally or vertically, the brightness pattern of the reflective surface changes dynamically to accompany the movement of the point of observation, causing the observer to perceive a strong glittering sensation.

  • Patent number: 6505961
Abstract: There are provided a method of evaluating a basic curved surface for a reflecting mirror, an evaluation system for evaluating a basic curved surface for a reflecting mirror, and a computer-readable storage medium on which a program is recorded. There are provided a step (105a) of entering light source information on a light source and design information representative of a basic curved surface, and a step (105e) of displaying closed curved lines on a display device. The closed curved line data represents one or more closed curved lines which are included in one or more planes intersecting an axis Ax as well as in the basic curved surface. The axis Ax is determined to extend in a direction in which light from a light source is to be reflected by a reflecting mirror and to pass through a light source position defined by the light source information. The closed curved line data can be generated by obtaining lines of intersections of the plains and the basic curved surface.

  • Patent number: 6493096
Abstract: In a shape determining method of a reflective surface 10a of a reflector 1 in a vehicle lamp in such structure that a basic shape thereof is a free-formed surface 20 satisfying shape constraints etc. and that reflective surface elements are assigned to segments obtained by dividing the free-formed surface 20 into an array pattern, a reference plane is defined as a plane opposite to the free-formed surface 20 and normal to the optical axis Ax, and the free-formed surface 20 is projected onto the reference plane to determine the reflective surface. This permits uniform handling independent of the shape of the free-formed surface 20 and thus can simplify design steps and make the resultant shape of the reflective surface suitable. Thus, the reflective surface determining method of the reflector in the vehicle lamp permitting efficient creation of the segments on the free-formed surface and efficient creation of the reflective surface elements assigned to the respective segments can be realized.

Abstract: In a method of determining the shape of reflective surface 10a of reflector 1 in the structure in which the basic shape is a free-formed surface 20 satisfying shape constraints or the like and in which reflective surface elements are assigned to an array of segments obtained by dividing the free-formed surface 20, evaluation and selection of the surface shape is carried out at two stages; i.e., evaluation and selection according to light incidence angles at the stage of creation of the free-formed surface 20 and evaluation and selection according to light reflecting regions at the stage of creation of a reflective surface consisting of a plurality of reflective surface elements. This reduces nonuniformity of in-surface light distribution during on periods of a lamp, in the reflective surface obtained, and thus improves design efficiency thereof.

  • Patent number: 6364514
Abstract: A vehicular lamp fixture, such as an indicator lamp, having an improved external appearance and originality. Diffusion lens elements are arranged at predetermined positions offset from a lamp fixture optical axis of an inner lens. The lens element optical axes of the diffusion lens elements pass through a boundary that divides the reflective surface of a reflector into an inner peripheral area and an outer peripheral area, each of which approaches a paraboloid of revolution centered on the lamp fixture optical axis. The reflective surface is formed as a curved surface curving forward of the paraboloid of revolution P. Light from a filament is irradiated as convergent light in a radial direction onto the diffusion lens elements, causing the diffusion lens elements to shine brightly and causing an image of the filament to appear reflected at central positions of the diffusion lens elements when seen from the front of the lamp fixture.
