Through the rotation of a rotating cylinder (1), the chuck apparatus expands or contracts a plurality of jaws (3) inserted into a hole (2a) provided to a tip end of a body (2), and sandwiches and holds a tool (4) using the jaws (3). An annular rotating body (8) screwed together with the jaws (3) and rotating together with the rotating cylinder (1) is fitted to the body (2) inside the rotating cylinder (1).

Ratchet teeth forming an annular shape are provided in the body, an annular rotary member threadedly engaged with the jaws and rotated together with the rotary sleeve is fitted around the body inside of the rotary sleeve, a retainer spring member detachably engaging with the ratchet teeth is disposed outside of the ratchet teeth and the retainer spring member is provided so as to rotate a circumference of the ratchet teeth in accordance with the rotation of the rotary member. The ratchet teeth are formed of a harder member than the body, and the harder member is a discrete member from the body.

Each of a plurality of jaws is slidably disposed within a respective guide and includes a thread section along an outer surface thereof. A jaw-engaging mechanism is configured to operably engage the groove so as to be rotatable around the body, and includes a thread section configured to complementarily engage the thread sections of the jaws. A sleeve extends over the jaw-engaging mechanism. A retaining member is disposed substantially within the sleeve, and is operably engaged with and extends between the body and the sleeve, rearwardly of the radially outwardly projecting portion of the body.
