Publication number: 20040021987Abstract: Disclosed herein is a flying head slider having an air bearing surface forming portion opposed to a recording medium and adapted to receive a buoyancy produced by air bearing due to a dynamic pressure between the air bearing surface forming portion and a recording surface of the recording medium. The flying head slider includes a head for recording and/or reproducing information, a head mounting portion formed on the air bearing surface forming portion for mounting the head, and a projection of diamond-like carbon provided on the head mounting portion at the upstream side of air flow, which is along the slider, on said head. By providing the projection at the upstream side of air flow on the head, the penetration and deposition of any disturbance such as lubricant and dust to the head can be minimized to thereby prevent damage to the head. Accordingly, the operation reliability of the slider can be improved.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 25, 2003Publication date: February 5, 2004Applicant: Sony CorporationInventors: Michio Yotsuya, Toshio Mamiya, Kazushige Kawazoe, Koji Fukumoto, Kazuyuki Yamamoto

Publication number: 20030214756Abstract: A flying head slider is disclosed which can fly stably above the surface of a recording medium and thereby prevent deterioration of a reproduction signal output of the head. The flying head slider has a head for recording and reproducing information onto and from a recording medium and has an air bearing portion at an opposing portion thereof which opposes to the recording medium. The flying head slider is acted upon by buoyancy by air bearing caused by dynamic pressure between the air bearing portion and a surface of the recording medium. The flying head slider is disposed with respect to the recording medium such that, within a flying region of the flying head slider in a radial direction of the information recording medium between an inner circumference position and an outer circumference position of the surface of the recording medium, a flying pitch angle equal to or greater than 120 &mgr;rad is formed between the air bearing portion and the surface of the recording medium.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2003Publication date: November 20, 2003Applicant: Sony CorporationInventors: Kazuyuki Yamamoto, Michio Yotsuya, Koji Fukumoto, Kazushige Kawazoe, Toshio Mamiya

Patent number: 6594219Abstract: A recording and/or reproducing device having a magnetic head unit includes a slider having a magnetic head element fitted to the front end thereof, a head support arm carrying the slider fitted to the front end thereof and urged toward a disk and a ramp member for guiding the slider fitted to the head support arm from a stand-by position to a recording/reproducing position for recording information signals on or reproducing information signals from the disk and is adapted to record information signals on or reproduce information signals from the rotating disk. The ramp member pushes up the head support arm in a twisted state, so as to make the end of the slider located upstream relative to the other end in the sense of rotation of the disk to face upward relative to the disk when the slider is driven to move between the stand-by position and the recording/reproducing position.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2000Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Kazuyuki Yamamoto, Kazushige Kawazoe

Patent number: 6590744Abstract: A disk drive using a disk including a substrate made from a high polymer material is capable of reducing a spacing between a head slider and the disk to a value comparable to a spacing between the head slider and a disk having a glass substrate. A head slider of a disk drive, which is flied against the disk formed with a high polymer substrate, is specified such that a width W is in a range of 1.5 mm or less, and a length L is in a range of 1.8 mm or less, preferably, in a range of 1.25 mm or less. With this configuration, it is possible to realize a stable low flight height without the contact of the head slider with a disk and hence to realize high density recording, even if the disk is formed with a high polymer substrate in which a radius of curvature in the radial direction is about 10 m and a radius of curvature in the circumferential direction is about 20 m. Further, a head is fixed at a central portion of at least one of a pair of rails symmetrical in the width direction of the head slider.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2000Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Hironobu Ohuchi, Kazushige Kawazoe

Patent number: 6515815Abstract: Described herein is a hard disk drive HDD which adopts a CSS type floating or levitation head device. A condensation sensor is provided on the inner surface of a housing or chassis. Since the capacity of the chassis is large and moisture adsorbed by the chassis due to dew condensation or the like is hard to dry, the condensation or the like produced on the inner surface side of the chassis can be detected accurately by placing the condensation sensor on the inner surface of the chassis. The condensation sensor may be attached to an arm or suspension constituting an actuator, a head slider, a flexible printed board, or a portion or the like formed of the same material as that for a magnetic disc. When the condensation or the like is detected by the condensation sensor, the magnetic disc is allowed to stand by in a state of remaining stopped rotating until it is not detected.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2001Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Michio Yotsuya, Hironobu Ohuchi, Kazushige Kawazoe

Patent number: 5786962Abstract: In a magnetic head assembly in which a slider mounted with a magnetic head is fitted to a gimbal portion where lead wires are provided, the thickness of a gimbal portion where terminals of the lead wires are formed is formed thinner than another gimbal portion, and the terminals of the lead wires formed on this thin gimbal portion la are transformed so as to come into contact with terminals of the magnetic head. It is thus possible to connect terminals of thin film lead wires formed on a gimbal to terminals of a magnetic head mounted on a slider easily and surely.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1997Date of Patent: July 28, 1998Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Kazushige Kawazoe

Patent number: 5504639Abstract: A magnetic disk recording and/or reproducing method is utilized with a magnetic disk on which pre-formatting signals such as a servo signal for head positioning and an address signal are previously formed by uneven surfaces. The method employs a slider with a magnetic head mounted there. The mass (m) of slider, including the mass of the head, satisfies the following equalities;m<0.93.times.10.sup.6 +(2.pi..times.i.times.n).sup.2orm<2.21.times.10.sup.6 +(2.pi..times.i.times.n).sup.2where (i) is the number of servo segments around a periphery of the disk and (n) is the rotation of the disk per second rps!. The mass m of the slider and head is selected so that a passing frequency of the servo segments beneath the head is not equal to a resonance frequency between the slider containing the head and an air film located between the slider and the disk.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Kazushige Kawazoe
