    Abstract: This invention relates to a method for removing contaminant material (e.g., graffiti) from a substrate, comprising: applying a coating composition to the substrate, the coating composition comprising water, a water-soluble film forming polymer, a wetting agent and a thixotropic additive; dehydrating the aqueous composition and/or crosslinking the polymer to form a sacrificial barrier coating; depositing the contaminant material on the barrier coating; and removing at least part of the barrier coating and the contaminant material from the substrate.
