Abstract: A clamshell container with a hinged connection is provided. The clamshell container includes a base portion and a cover portion that rotates about a hinge axis relative to the base portion into a closed position. The base portion and cover portion each include a sidewall, a perimeter rim and a perimeter flange. The hinged connection is located along the base perimeter rim and flange and the cover perimeter rim and flange. The hinged connection includes one or more indented first structural elements formed into the cover perimeter flange and one ore more raised second structural elements extending from the base perimeter flange. The first and second structural elements are positionally aligned so that when the cover portion is rotated into the closed position, the second structural elements are received within the first structural elements. The structural elements increase rigidity of the hinged connection and limit potential deformation and fracture.

Abstract: A container lid is provided having a lid insert constructed of a paper-based material and a peripheral ring constructed of a plastic material. The ring is configured to be separated from the lid insert upon disposal. The lid insert includes a peripheral rim extending outwardly from a central cover portion. The ring includes an outwardly extending flange and a skirt depending downwardly from the flange. A first undercut extends inwardly from the skirt defining a channel sized and shaped for receiving an outer edge of the lid insert's peripheral rim. The channel may alternatively be sized and shaped for also receiving an outer edge of a peripheral rim of a container base to which the lid is attached. Another embodiment includes a second undercut located beneath the first undercut and defining a second channel into which an outer edge of the rim of the container base may be received.

Abstract: A cup carrier for holding beverage cups within a range of shapes and sizes is provided. The carrier has a cup-holding socket that has stabilizing shoulders and stabilizing walls extending inwardly and downwardly therefrom. The stabilizing walls include an upper portion having a relatively shallow angle and lower portions having a steeper angle. This extends the stabilizing wall further into an upper region of the socket, thereby enabling the stabilizing wall to contact smaller diameter cups at a higher point in order to increase stability. The upper portion contacts larger cups inserted into the socket. Because the upper portion initially has a relatively shallow angle, it exerts a desirable gripping force on the cups when it is deflected outwardly by the cup's sidewall. The carrier also includes a stepped center cavity for increased strength and rigidity.
