    Abstract: A process for producing a highly pure cis-epoxysuccinate in a high yield while suppressing a production of DL-tartrate as a by-product by epoxidizing a maleate with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an epoxidation catalyst, wherein said epoxidation is carried out in an aqueous solution containing 30 to 90% by volume of a water-soluble alcohol. It is possible to recycle the mother liquor separated of the formed cis-epoxysuccinate to the reaction system. The obtained cis-epoxysuccinate is useful as a polymer resin additive, a detergent builder(surfactant) and an intermediate for producing tartaric acid.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of dimerizing lower olefins which comprises dimerizing a lower olefins in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalyst used comprises a nickel compound, an organic aluminum compound, and a phosphite compound having the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are phenyl groups optionally substituted by substituents and may be different from each other, at least two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 have a hydrocarbon group as a substituent in the ortho position; A is a divalent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group which optionally has a substituent; and n is 0 or 1. The present invention is also directed a method of producing alcohol by means of hydroformylating and hydrogenating the newly formed olefins obtained through the said dimerization method of the lower olefins.

The resulting octenes are excellent as a raw material of alcohols for a plasticizer, and an excellent plasticizer can be obtained from alcohols having 9 carbon atoms produced by using the octenes.

    Abstract: An incinerator designed so that the reaction of unburnt gas with oxygen progresses rapidly to thereby minimize the amount of unburnt gas generated therefrom. An intermediate portion of a combustion chamber is contracted in the cross-sectional direction with respect to the direction of flow of gas to thereby provide a throttling passage (14) over a predetermined distance. A part of the combustion chamber which is below the throttling passage (14) and a part of the combustion chamber which is above the passage (14) are enlarged in the cross-sectional direction to define a lower combustion chamber (13) and an upper combustion chamber (15), respectively. A first barrier (16) is disposed in the vicinity of the inlet of the throttling passage (14) across the lower combustion chamber (13) and a second barrier (17) is disposed in the vicinity of the outlet of the throttling passage (14) across the upper combustion chamber (15).
