  • Publication number: 20080174897
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for formatting a timing-based servo pattern on a magnetic tape. A first write head concurrently writes a base number of stripes to a plurality of first stripe patterns with a first and third element and writes the base number of stripes to a plurality of second stripe patterns with a second and fourth element of a first write head in response to at least one first write signal. A second write head concurrently writes an incremental number of stripes to a specified first stripe pattern to form a first incremental stripe pattern with a fifth write element and writes the incremental number of stripes to a specified second stripe pattern to form a second incremental stripe pattern with a sixth write element.

  • Patent number: 7403350
Abstract: Multiple servo sensors are laterally displaced over a distance less than the transverse width of timing based servo track laterally extending transitions. The servo sensors are configured to sense the transitions, and servo detection logic detects the relative timings of the laterally extending transitions sensed by the laterally displaced servo sensors as the magnetic tape is moved in the longitudinal direction. Logic is configured to determine from the relative timings of the sensed transitions for at least one known set of laterally extending transitions having differing slants, the lateral position of a servo sensor by employing the relative timing detected from one servo sensor and the relative timing detected from another servo sensor, or determine the longitudinal velocity of the magnetic tape by determining the difference between the relative timing detected from one servo sensor and the relative timing detected from another servo sensor.

  • Publication number: 20080170281
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed to align the write channel portion of a holographic data storage system. The method establishes a write threshold correlation factor, provides a reference beam, and illuminates a holographic data storage medium encoded with a write reference orientation image with the reference beam to generate a write channel alignment data beam comprising a projected write reference orientation image. The method projects the write channel alignment data beam onto an optical detector, and calculates a first write correlation factor using the projected write reference orientation image, a stored write reference orientation image, and the tangential matched filter. If the method determines that the first write correlation factor is greater than or equal to the write threshold correlation factor, then the method determines that the spatial write channel is properly aligned.

  • Publication number: 20080168193
Abstract: Provided are techniques for storing data. An Input/Output (I/O) command is received, wherein the I/O command includes a unique identifier that is associated with one region of a multi-format data store. The unique identifier is used to select an I/O channel from among multiple I/O channels, wherein each I/O channel is associated with a data format and with a region of the multi-format data store. The I/O command is forwarded to the selected I/O channel to access the region.

  • Publication number: 20080155360
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed to detect and repair an error condition in a device comprising a computer readable medium comprising computer readable code. The method supplies an engineering server comprising a configuration control database in communication with a product failure alert assembly. The method then interconnects the product failure alert assembly with a product comprising a computer readable medium comprising computer readable code. The method provides product failure information to the engineering server, identifies one or more error conditions, identifies one or more fault symptom codes, determines if the configuration control database comprises one or more code updates associated with those one or more fault symptom codes, and installs those one or more code updates on the product.

  • Publication number: 20080151338
Abstract: A method is disclosed to store and retrieve information using holographic data storage media. The method provides original data, generates a first image of that original data, and encodes that first image in a holographic data storage medium at a first storage location. The method then generates a second image of the original data, where the second image differs from the first image, and encodes the second image in a holographic data storage medium at a second storage location, where the second storage location differs from the first storage location.

  • Publication number: 20080154416
Abstract: A method is disclosed to monitor an out-sourced manufacturing process: A second manufacturer, manufactures a product under contract with a first manufacturer, using an out-sourced manufacturing process. The method supplies a yield monitoring assembly in communication with both the first manufacturer and the second manufacturer. The method establishes a warning threshold, calculates a measured out-sourced manufacturing process yield, and determines if the measured out-sourced manufacturing process yield is greater than said warning threshold. If the method determines that the measured out-sourced manufacturing process yield is not greater than the warning threshold, then the method provides a warning message to the first manufacturer.

  • Patent number: 7375910
Abstract: A data storage cartridge comprises data storage media configured to store data for read and/or write access, wherein the data may be arranged in a plurality of partitions; and a plurality of cartridge memories. Each cartridge memory comprises a communication interface and a memory, wherein the information of the memory is formatted to allow association with at least one of the plurality of partitions of the data storage media. Thus, each of the cartridge memories may have a separate user and provide access for that user to a separate partition or subset of partitions.

  • Publication number: 20080062796
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for calibrating a holographic storage device. A read channel reads a factory-stored hologram from a holographic media. A calculation module calculates a read difference between the read factory-stored hologram and a first holographic pattern that digitally describes the factory-stored hologram. In one embodiment, a calibration module calibrates the read channel with the read difference.

  • Patent number: 6339505
Abstract: A lens assembly with materials that densify and rarefy as a function of radiation dose. The lens assembly can be provided for use in photolithographic exposure tools. The combination of densifying and rarefying materials in the lens elements of exposure tools compensates for changes in the index of refraction of the materials. The lens assembly of the present invention corrects, by design, for radiation-induced changes in the indices of refraction of the lens element materials. By compensating for radiation-induced changes, the lens assembly has a longer useful lifetime.

  • Patent number: 5805750
Abstract: A variable groove depth grating coupler located on a surface of an optical waveguide which couples a guided optical wave traveling in the optical waveguide to an outcoupled external wave has a resultant variable effective refractive index creating an aberration in the outcoupled optical wavefront. The wavefront aberration is corrected by providing the coupler grooves at a variable grating period which offsets effects of the variable effective refractive index on the wavefront aberrations.
