Patent number: 7493942Abstract: Apparatus and method for cooling heated fluids, such as exhaust gases, flowing through a heat exchanger comprising one or more exhaust plenums and one or more coolant plenums, and providing increased coolant velocity in that portion of the coolant plenums contacting the inlet portion of the exhaust plenums. Local increased coolant velocity is provided by any means, including decreasing the area-in-flow of the coolant plenums wherein increased velocity is desired, shaping or baffling either or both inlet or outlet coolant tanks in fluidic contact with coolant plenums wherein increased velocity is desired, or a combination thereof.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2006Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventors: Keith D. Agee, Richard Paul Beldam, Roland L. Dilley, Jr.

Patent number: 7322403Abstract: A heat exchanger includes a shell that has an inner chamber defined by an inside wall surface. A tube stack disposed within the inner chamber and includes a plurality of flat elongated tubes that define a first fluid flow path. The tubes each include a wire that is wound around a tube outside surface and that extends in a helical manner along a tube length. When stacked together, the wires of adjacent tubes connect with one another to form an “X” pattern connection that operates to both distance the adjacent tubes and form a second fluid flow path along the outside surfaces of the tubes. The connection between the wires causes turbulent flow in the coolant that improves the heat transfer characteristic of the coolant, and the connection between the wires provides structural support to the tubes in the tube stack to help reduce vibration induced heat exchanger failures.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2005Date of Patent: January 29, 2008Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventor: Keith D. Patent number: 7165537Abstract: A charge air cooler with an integral precooler is disclosed which cools charge air by using both liquid coolant and air coolant. The charge air path is not affected by the use of the liquid coolant. The charge air cooler disclosed can cool particularly hot charge air without a significant drop in pressure.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2004Date of Patent: January 23, 2007Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Keith D. Patent number: 7073573Abstract: Apparatus and method for cooling heated fluids, such as exhaust gases, flowing through a heat exchanger including at least one exhaust gas plenum with fins or other heat transfer structure and at least one coolant plenum, and providing decreased heat exchange in that portion of the exhaust gas plenum contacting the inlet thereof by decreasing the fin or heat transfer structure density in such portion relative to the remainder of the exhaust gas plenum.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2004Date of Patent: July 11, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventor: Keith D. Patent number: 6928730Abstract: An apparatus and method for cooling hot fluids, especially exhaust gases, with a multi-pass cooler core. The cooler core is particularly useful for cooling exhaust gases flowing in an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system or regime in operative association with an internal combustion engine, such as a diesel engine. Cooled gases are recirculated to the engine input to help reduce noxious exhaust emissions. The invention utilizes unequal areas-in-flow between the first exhaust pass through the core and the second and subsequent passes through the core. The first pass through the core features an area-in-flow comparatively larger than the area-in-flow of the second pass. The difference in areas-in-flow between passes influences gas velocities to reduce fouling, despite changes in exhaust gas temperature between passes through the core.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2003Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventors: Richard Paul Beldam, Keith D. Patent number: 6293102Abstract: An air brake compressor supply fitting for an internal combustion engine having a turbocharger and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is located downstream of the turbocharger and upstream of where the exhaust gas is introduced into the intake air of the engine. The supply fitting can be integrated into an outlet manifold of a charge air cooler (CAC associated with the turbocharger or into an EGR mixer for mixing exhaust gas with the intake air of the engine at a location in the EGR mixer upstream from the location where the exhaust gas is introduced into the intake air of the engine.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1999Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Kevin E. Patent number: 4807441Abstract: A cooling system for a sealed enclosure having heat generating equipment therein characterized by force convection indirect cooling of the heat generating equipment combined with a natural convention external finned heat sink. The cooling system or heat exchanger is mounted to the wall of the sealed enclosure and includes two side plates which are mounted a spaced distance from one another. One side plate forms a portion of a wall of the sealed enclosure and has fin elements mounted on one side, which side is outside of the enclosure. Fin elements are mounted between the two side plates extending inwardly from opposing ends of the side plates a desired distance thereby forming a central plenum between the two sets of fin elements. A fan is mounted in a manner to drawn air in between the side plates and return it to the enclosed environment.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1987Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventors: Keith D.
