  • Patent number: 5058124
Abstract: An external cavity laser assembly in which the laser chip is within a hermetically sealed package and the external cavity is outside the hermetic package. A collimating lens in a screw threaded mounting is disposed outside the hermetic package, the screw thread permitting focussing. The cavity is turned by rotation and translation of a grating, the position of which is electrically controlled via piezoelectric stacks. Thermal expansion of the stacks is compensated by mounting the grating on a rod of suitable material (e.g., ceramic) which also serves to reduce the cavity length while allowing maximum piezoextension. In a second embodiment the assembly is a tunable laser amplifier, with a grating being driven in a similar manner to provide the tuning.

  • Patent number: 5018831
Abstract: An optical resonant device comprises a laser diode (14), a graded-index collimating lens (11) and a prism grating (17). The lens (11) is rigidly connected to the prism grating (17). Coarse tuning by adjustment of the angle of incidence of light on the grating (17) is achieved by laterally offsetting the laser (14) relative to the central optical axis C of the lens (11). The grating (17) is angled relative to the optical axis C so that the tuned position of the laser (14) is at or close to the optical axis C.

  • Patent number: 4817100
Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring and/or controlling the frequency of a beam of coherent radiation. The apparatus comprises a reference source (1) which is controlled to generate reference radiation beam with a frequency which is repeatedly swept through a range of operating frequencies. This reference beam is combined with a beam of coherent radiation from a test source and the combined beams are fed to a photodiode (9). The output of the photodiode (9) can be displayed so that the upper and lower beat frequencies can be determined enabling the variation of the average of the upper and lower beat frequencies with time to be monitored. Alternatively, the average beat frequency can be fed back as a control signal to control the test beam source (8). In this latter case, the frequency of the test beam will be locked.

  • Patent number: 4744619
Abstract: To make a low loss connection between the core (5) of a single mode optical fibre (1) and a waveguide (2) on a waveguide substrate (3), a support block (4) which straddles the waveguide (2) is mounted on the waveguide substrate (3). The end-face (6) of the optical fibre (1) is fixed to both the waveguide substrate (3) and the support block (4) with transparent, light curable, adhesive (8). The support block (4) may be affixed to the substrate (3) with the same adhesive as is used to fix the optical fibre (1) to the substrate (3).
