Patent number: 5316607Abstract: A plastic annular disk has a convex exterior surface upon which is situated an adhesive wafer. A removable protective shield is formed to have a substantially wrinkle-free surface with a contour identical to that of the convex surface. The disk and wafer are placed in a vacuum chamber, below a planar plastic sheet. The top of the chamber is heated. The space above the sheet is evacuated to draw the sheet against the heated surface. The remaining portion of the chamber is then evacuated to eliminate air between the wafer and disk. Lastly, the top of the chamber is vented such that the heated sheet is pressed over the wafer and disk.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: E. R. Squibb & SonsInventors: Kenneth A. Johnsen, Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 5250043Abstract: A bandage including a superabsorbent pad covered by a porous cover pad placed on a thin, flexible hydrocolloid adhesive layer leaving a portion of the adhesive layer around the pads as an adhesive border is disclosed. One side of the adhesive layer is laminated to a polymeric backing or non-woven fabric layer and a protective cover layer is applied over the pads and border portion. The protective cover layer may be silicone coated release paper and the bandage may be subjected to a vacuum thus forming the adhesive layer to the pads resulting in the border portion being substantially coplanar with the exposed surface of the cover pad overlaying the superabsorbent pad.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1989Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Inventors: Frank S. Castellana, Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 5074852Abstract: Occlusive attaching means comprising a first relatively thick adhesive component to be secured to the skin around the stoma and a relatively thin flexible second adhesive component to be secured to the skin at a distance from the stoma. Both adhesive components include an occlusive adhesive layer formulated as a blend containing one or more water soluble or swellable hydrocolloids dispersed in polyisobutylene along with other optional ingredients. The attaching means can be utilized as part of a one or two-piece ostomy system.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1989Date of Patent: December 24, 1991Assignee: E. R. Patent number: 4826496Abstract: An ostomy device for releasably connecting an ostomy bag to an adhesive backed label including a mounting member for connecting one of two coupling parts to the label. The mounting member comprises an expandable portion for facilitating displacement of the connected coupling part between a normal position and an expanded position. The expanded portion comprises a pair of accordion-like folds including an inner fold and a smaller outer fold. The connected coupling part comprises a rib portion having a deflectible sealing strip extending therefrom. The rib portion is connected to the mounting member adjacent the outer folds such that the sealing strip is positioned intermediate the inner and outer folds when the coupling part is in the normal position. The inner fold guides discharge from the stoma into the bag and away from the interengaged coupling parts. In an alternate embodiment, the mounting member is affixed to the label.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1987Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: E. R. Squibb and Sons, Inc.Inventor: Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 4685990Abstract: An ostomy device comprises an ostomy bag with a first coupling member attached thereto. A second coupling member for mating engagement with the first is attached to an adhesive backed label for adhering to the skin of the wearer around a stoma by a flexible mounting member comprising first and second sections coupled together at an inner peripheral region defining a stoma aperture therein. The second coupling member is attached to the first section at an outer peripheral region spaced apart from the inner peripheral region by hot melt adhesive while the second section is attached to the label at an outer peripheral region spaced apart from the inner peripheral region. The second section is attached by hot melt adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1986Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Assignee: E. R. Squibb & Sons, Inc.Inventor: Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 4673401Abstract: A urine collection receptacle is detachably mounted to a brief. The weight of the receptacle is supported by the brief. The wall of the brief has an opening defined by aligned, oppositely facing rigid annular parts. The receptacle has a penis receiving opening defined by a rigid annular part which releasably engages the annular part on the exterior wall of the brief. A flexible membrane engages the penis to prevent urine back-up into the brief. The membrane may attach directly to the annular part on the interior wall of the brief or may be mounted on an annular part which releasably engages the annular part on the interior wall of the brief. The diameter of the annular parts is larger than that of the penis to enable the penis to be freely received through the parts and into the receptacle.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1984Date of Patent: June 16, 1987Inventors: Ole R. Jensen, Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 4664661Abstract: An ostomy device for releasably connecting an ostomy bag to an adhesive backed label including a mounting member for connecting one of two coupling parts to the label. The mounting member comprises an expandable portion for facilitating displacement of the connected coupling part between a normal closed position and an expanded position. The expanded portion comprises a pair of accordion-like folds including an inner fold and a smaller outer fold. The connected coupling part comprises a rib portion having a deflectible sealing strip extending therefrom. The rib portion is connected to the mounting member adjacent the outer folds such that the sealing strip is positioned intermediate the inner and outer folds when the coupling part is in the normal closed position. The inner fold guides discharge from the stoma into the bag and away from the interengaged coupling parts. In an alternate embodiment, the mounting member is affixed to the label.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1984Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignee: E. R. Squibb & Sons, Inc.Inventor: Keith T. Ferguson

Patent number: 4583976Abstract: A catheter support comprising an anchoring pad and a flexible strap, a portion of which is attached thereto, is disclosed. One side of the anchoring pad carries an adhesive compatible for use with human skin. One side of the strap carries a fastener material. With the pad in place, a catheter is laid against the pad, and the free end of the strap is folded across the catheter. The fastener material of the free end is pressed against the fastener material attached to the pad to hold the catheter in place. Alternatively, the side of the pad opposite the side with the adhesive carries fastener material, and the flexible strap is separate therefrom. A channel is present through the fastener material on either the pad, flexible strap or both to receive the catheter.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1984Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: E. R.
