  • Publication number: 20070071566
Abstract: A right angle, modular machining head can be removably mounted on the too head of a CNC machining center to provide contour machining of a work piece around a C-axis. The modular head includes a rotating drive that moves the tool around a contour axis, producing nutational motion allowing close contouring of a work piece. The tool can be powered by a driven spindle on the tool head, or by a motor carried within the modular head. A locating connection between the modular head and the tool head, in combination with a position signals produced by a rotary encoder on the modular head registers the exact position of the tool within the coordinate reference system used by the machining center control system.

  • Publication number: 20060241804
Abstract: The present invention comprises methods of machining a workpiece. In one embodiment, a method includes positioning a workpiece in a first position in a process station of a machine system, and forming at least one check feature on the workpiece. A position of the check feature is then sensed while the workpiece is positioned in the first position, and one or more machined features are formed on the workpiece relative to the check feature while the workpiece is positioned in the first position. The workpiece is then moved from the first position to a second position within the process station, and a position of the check feature is again sensed while the workpiece is positioned in the second position. One or more machined features are then formed on the workpiece relative to the check feature while the workpiece is positioned in the second position.

  • Publication number: 20060070345
Abstract: Reinforced structural assemblies and methods for forming such assemblies are disclosed. In one embodiment, a ribbed portion includes rib segments having a vertical height that extend laterally between junctions to form a network coupled to a supporting substrate. The rib segments include a plurality of flanged portions coupled to a lateral edge of the rib segments. In another embodiment, the ribbed portion includes rib segments having flanged portions on opposing lateral edges that receive opposing substrates. Similarly, a method includes forming a ribbed portion having a plurality of rib segments extending laterally between junctions. The rib segments include a plurality of flanged portions on at least one of the first and second lateral edges. First and second substrates are coupled to opposing sides of the ribbed portion.

  • Publication number: 20060070501
Abstract: A precision shear is provided which allows the removal of material from a machined part. The shear provides a precision cut that requires little or no finish grinding or polishing thereby reducing the time required to produce a machined part. The precision shear may be operated by hand or attached to a machine.

  • Publication number: 20050127139
Abstract: A preform and method for forming a structural assembly are provided. The preform can be formed by friction welding structural members to a base member and subsequently providing a connection material to join the structural members. The resulting preform can be formed with dimensions and a configuration that approximate the dimensions and configuration of the structural assembly. Thus, the structural assembly can be formed by joining multiple members that are generally smaller than the finished assembly.

  • Patent number: 6379090
Abstract: A force balanced irregular pitch reamer is provided that is particularly well suited for precision operations requiring small tolerances. More specifically, a reamer is provided having a shank, a body portion, and a plurality of cutting teeth extending outwardly therefrom. The teeth are spaced at non-uniform intervals around the body portion, wherein each tooth includes a cutting surface and rake face, and defines a rake angle between the rake face and an imaginary line extending from the central or longitudinal axis of the reamer to the cutting surface. In operation, the reamer is rotated about its central axis and is plunged into a formed hole sized slightly smaller than the reamer such that the reamer engages the workpiece and produces a smooth finished hole. Each tooth generates a cutting force with determinable magnitude and direction to define cutting force vectors.
