  • Patent number: 6197726
Abstract: Secure cards consisting essentially of a card base having an overlying thermally transferred topcoat, with a thermal transfer image in a dye-receptive surface of the card base and the topcoat typically of a polymethyl methacrylate composition, frequently show severe image fading after relative short periods of time when kept and carried in normal PVC pouches. To improve protection against such fading, the present topcoat comprises at least one barrier layer which is formed of a polymer composition having a Tg>70° C., and which is resistant to the formation of microscopic cracks in the topcoat under tensile bending that is insufficient to cause macroscopic permanent deformation.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: March 6, 2001
    Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries PLC
Inventors: Kelvin P Adkins, Richard A Hann, Gary J Jenno
  • Patent number: 6083872
Abstract: A transfer foil comprising a carrier sheet and a thermally transferable overlay, the overlay comprising a transparent film of polymeric material having dispersed therein surface-stabiiised titanium dioxide, wherein the titanium dioxide is stabilised by coating the surface with alumina, silica or zirconia or mixtures thereof.A thermal transfer dye sheet ribbon comprising a substrate supporting different coloured dyecoats provided as discrete uniform print-size panels arranged in a repeated sequence along the ribbon, and a thermally transferable overlay comprising a transparent film of polymeric material having dispersed therein surface-stabilised titanium dioxide, positioned between each repeated sequence of the dyecoat panels, wherein the titanium dioxide is stabilised by coating the surface with alumina, silica or zirconia or mixtures thereof.

  • Patent number: 5475673
Abstract: Recording media having a back coat and a recording layer on opposite sides of a substrate and a super coat adsorbed onto the back coat and/or the recording layer are disclosed. The super coat suitably has a low surface energy. Such media are particularly useful in optical recording applications where the media are in tape form and stored on spools.

Date of Patent: December 12, 1995
    Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries plc
    Inventor: Kelvin P. Adkins
  • Patent number: 5382463
Abstract: Optical recording tape has a backcoat providing a surface texture designed to impart high static friction between the opposite faces of the tape to enable the tape to maintain pack integrity during storage and transport.

  • Patent number: 5008134
Abstract: An electroconductive coating composition for a plastics substrate, such as a poly(ethylene terephthalate) film, comprises a polymeric electrolyte and a polyepoxy resin. Surface conductivity may be promoted by the inclusion of an enhancer or by treatment with an interactive solvent medium. Substrates coated with the composition exhibit substantially permanent antistatic characteristics when subjected to photographic processing techniques.
