  • Patent number: 10612616
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a shock attenuation device configured to operate between a structure and a mass that is supported by and moveable relative to the structure in a guided manner along a stroking direction. In one embodiment, a notch load portion is configured to provide a resisting force to relative displacement of the supported mass over a first stage stroking distance according to a predefined load profile that includes a spike load peaking at a first threshold load value at the onset of relative displacement, and a substantially constant notch load for a remainder of the first stage stroking distance. A constant load portion arranged serially with the notch load portion is configured to provide a substantially constant resisting force to displacement of the supported mass at a second threshold load value over a second stage stroking distance, wherein the second threshold load value is higher than the first threshold load value.

  • Patent number: 10166889
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a shock absorbing vehicle seating system. In one embodiment the seating system includes a seat moveably attached to a vehicle by a seat guide apparatus configured to constrain seat movement to a stroking direction. The system further includes a spring damper with opposed first and second ends, configured to compress along a longitudinal axis extending through the ends in response to an external compressive load, and an energy attenuating component with a deformable portion disposed between a first end and a second end thereof. The spring damper and energy attenuating component are arranged serially with respect to one another, and together form a seat supporting assembly disposed between the seat and the vehicle. The energy attenuating component is configured to deform in a predictable manner in response to a shock load that reaches a predefined threshold value, allowing the seat to stroke in the stroking direction as the energy attenuating component absorbs energy.

  • Patent number: 10161469
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a shock attenuation device configured for use in conjunction with a body movably mounted to a structure along a stroking direction to attenuate shock loads associated with a high energy impact event on the structure. The device includes an elongated metal frame with left and right sides symmetrically disposed about a longitudinal slot extending from proximate a first end of the frame to a second end. The frame is mountable to one of the body and structure in an orientation causing the longitudinal slot to align with the stroking direction. A mandrel mountable to the other one of the body and structure is positioned in the frame at one end of the slot. The mandrel has width and length dimensions measured in the plane of the frame, wherein a maximum width of the mandrel is greater than a width of the slot.

  • Patent number: 10093203
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a self adjusting energy attenuating vehicle seating system configured to automatically compensate for variations in the weight of seated occupants. A seat is mounted in a vehicle and configured to stroke in a downward direction, generally toward a floor of the vehicle, with an adjustable energy attenuating device disposed in a load path between the seat and a rigid structural portion of the vehicle. A signal processor removes variations in a seat weight signal attributable to vehicle or occupant motion, and outputs an energy attenuator adjustment signal corresponding to the weight of a seated occupant. The system may further include an actuator configured to receive the energy attenuator adjustment signal and adjust a load setting feature of the energy attenuating device accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8991569
Abstract: Designs and methods are provided for a hydraulic strut and control system suitable for energy attenuation applications such as vehicle seating system. In one exemplary embodiment the hydraulic strut includes a main cylinder having a first closed end, a second end with an opening. A main piston slidably disposed in the main cylinder divides it into a first fluid chamber between the main piston and the first end of the main cylinder, and a second fluid chamber between the main piston and the second end of the main cylinder. At least one fixed orifice through the piston provides fluid communication between the first and second fluid chambers. An integral flow control valve is adapted to vary the flow area of the at least one orifice through the piston. The flow control valve is operatively connected to a high speed actuator responsive to an electrical control signal.

  • Patent number: 5649035
Abstract: A fiber optic sensor for measuring strain on and within structures. The sensor includes an optical fiber, two reflective markers, and two thin layers of carrier material. The optical fiber is looped multiple times within the two thin layers of the carrier material. The optical signal circulates multiple times through the sensing region, as it is travels through the multiple loops of optical fiber within the carrier layers. The fiber optic sensor can be embedded within a structure, as that structure is being fabricated, or it can be attached onto a preexisting structure. An optical signal generated from a source such as a laser is input into one end of the optical fiber. The signal is reflected at reflective markers at predetermined positions in the optical fiber. The time delay of the signals received back is then analyzed to calculate the strain in the structure.
