The illumination device produces a pulse width modulation signal to control an illumination light source of the illumination device. The illumination light source is used to illuminate an environment. A driver of the illumination device provides a current to the illumination light source so the illumination light source emits light and a light detecting element of the illumination device detects a first brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at high potential. The driver stops providing the current to the illumination light source and the light detecting element detects a second brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at low potential.
